Project summary:
Lifestyle management to prevent and treat atrial fibrillation: a scoping literature review
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate. It is the most common heart rhythm disturbance in the UK, affecting about 1.4 million people. Atrial fibrillation in itself is not usually life threatening, but it can be distressing and, because having AF means that blood clots are more likely to form in the heart, it is a common cause of strokes. This results in substantial morbidity, mortality and healthcare use. The incidence of AF increases with advancing age and increased obesity. Other risk factors include hypertension, sleep apnoea, coronary artery disease, as well as alcohol and tobacco use. Many other lifestyle factors are thought to be associated with AF. While medical management (tablets and cardioversion) plays a key role on treating AF, addressing those lifestyle factors may also have a role in preventing or treating the condition, and there is a need for a literature review that considers and collates the evidence for each of these.
Aim: To produce a scoping literature review on lifestyle management to prevent and treat atrial fibrillation.
The student will work with this team and develop skills in:
Collaborating with our Swedish colleagues, by email and on-line meetings.
Performing a scoping literature review.
Presentation skills: presenting the findings.
Scientific writing: co-authoring a report that presents the results and conclusions.
No Swedish-language skills are needed – our Swedish collaborators speak superb English.
The team members:
Dr Michael Harris, GP and Honorary Senior Research Fellow, University of Exeter (project lead).
Prof Hans Thulesius, GP and Professor of Family Medicine, Lund University, Sweden.
Dr Thomas Lindow, clinical physiologist with a special interest in cardiovascular diseases, Lund University, Sweden.
Dr Glyn Thomas, Consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Bristol Heart Institute.
Prof Gordon Taylor, Medical statistician and director of the NIHR Research Design Service for the South West (RDS SW), based at the University of Exeter
