Housing and Residential Life
Residential Life Coordinator (RLC)
These are the director of your building! They are Masters level professionals. While they may potentially look young (or not), they're very competent in their jobs and know what they're doing. They're fun, friendly, and really do want to get to know and support you. They live on-campus and are a part of the 24-hours on-call rotation. They work on different things every day but can in general focus on things like
Student Development
Helping students grow into amazing adults. Our student staff get the most out of this, but residents also get the opportunity to connect with RLCs and have someone to talk with in a brave space.
Community Development
CAs aren't just the only ones that building community! RLC are also really involved (during non COVID times) to get their face and name out in a fun and positive way. Fingers crossed that next year will allows RLCs to do more in-person interactions.
Administrative Responsibilities
They run the building. They respond to a lot of emails, phone calls, texts, audits, requests, demands, committees, tasks, training, and more.
Facilities Management
We have buildings ranging from 5 years to over 60 years old! There is a lot of work that need to be done to keep our buildings running as smoothly as possible. There are days of success and days that nothing gets done and we can't really do much about it other than wait for parts to arrive.
Professional Development
This is more for the RLCs. It helps them become better at their jobs.
Other duties as assigned
This can be almost anything. Being on-call, helping students move-in, COVID response, program shopping, planning programs, helping other departments, volunteering, panels/workshops, or other random things that you wouldn't believe.
Ok! Housing & Residential Life is the heart of a successful EWU experience through excellence in community, academic, and social development. We have students that come back to campus year after year (YES! All FOUR YEARS!) because they love and value the experience of living on campus! We also believe in a few core values:
Student-Focused
We believe student success is the reason we exist. On-campus living provides unique resources and connections for them that off-campus living cannot compare! Granted, COVID really did a number on us, but we hope to change that next year!
Inclusivity
We believe in embracing and honoring the unique traditions or experiences of each individual. We are always learning and growing. We aren't perfect.
Collaboration
We believe in combining our efforts and resources with other departments to provide a diverse, optimal student experience. We work closely with EPIC, SAIL, CAPS, MCC, PRIDE Center, EE, and more!
Learning
We believe in providing opportunities to discover and utilize resources, concepts, and best practices for everyone. Trust us, it's not as easy as it sounds. Adulting is hard (and we're adults, kinda).
Stewardship
We believe in being purposeful in how we care for our environment, facilities, money, time, employees, and residents. This includes that hundreds of work orders that we submit every year! Students keep us busy!
Apartment Community Managers (ACMs)
Our apartment manager assists with the daily operations of the University Apartments: move-ins and move-outs, concerns, and overall upkeep of facilities.
Community Advisors (CAs)
Short answer: Living in the communities with our students, Community Advisors (CAs) are the first-responders to questions, crises, and student engagement.
CAs do so much for our department and our residents. They are the backbone and face of our department. Their job is very similar to the RLC but on a different level and capacity. CAs are current students that have decided to make a difference in the lives of their peers. Every CA has a different reason for applying for the job. They have different personalities, beliefs, genders, orientations, and more! They're just as unique as our students. There isn't a CA cookie cutter mold. We want staff that bring diversity to our department and help us support students to be better versions of themselves.
Here are some of the tasks that CAs do on a weekly basis:
Interact with residents/Build Community
Sort mail
Let students into their rooms
Programming/Event Planning
Promote diversity, equity & inclusion
Conflict mediation
On-call/Crisis Response
Intentional Conversations
Troubleshoot/Submit Work Orders
Customer service
Daily walkthroughs of the residence halls
Connect residents to campus resources
Hold residents accountable
Write reports
Attend staff meetings
Checkout equipment
Go to class
Study
Other tasks
Office Workers (OWs)
Our Office Workers (OWs) are the first faces most people see in our residence halls. They process mail, checkout equipment, and answer questions. Hours fluctuate and OWs might work weekends.
Main Office Workers (OWs)
Main Office Workers provide excellent customer service by answering broad Housing and Residential Life questions as well as completing tasks to support the day-to-day operations of our department. They work out of the Central Office and generally have greater knowledge of deadlines, contracts, meal plans, and information. This position is typically a former Office Worker, previous CAs, or students that have a solid understanding of EWU and Housing. Central Office Workers have consistent hours and most do not work weekends.
