In August, 2021, we assembled our leadership team. We set out to have each department represented and then wanted a balance of males and females as well as parents of varying ages of students. We had several teachers that volunteered to be a part of this venture, which showed some enthusiasm for what we were about to undertake.
After reflecting on the data gathered through educator surveys, the STEM leadership team recognized that we would need to make some programming changes in order to achieve our goal of helping our students thrive through a STEM focused education. From there, we set off to create our Mission and Vision Statements. We wanted to stay close to the mission and vision of our Elementary and Middle Schools that had recently been through this process. We felt that the corporation would benefit from the common language and continuity. After getting input from stakeholders and thorough discussions with our leadership team, we were able to finalize wording for the high school Mission Statement. The mission statement places and emphasis on real-world skills and interdisciplinary STEM experiences, which will be shown through the artifacts presented.
Attached, you will see all courses and pathways offered at Eastern High School and you will note that our goal is to include all courses at Eastern High School in our defined STEM Program.
You will find in the slides, the course and demographic information of students in our program. You will notice that we are working to define our program by including all courses that we offer. All teachers in the building participated in the PBL training and each teacher is implementing at least one STEM unit per quarter.
Based on the feedback from our educators, we recognized the need to provide professional development for teachers in order to build their capacity and understanding of quality STEM activities and lessons and begin creating those within their content. We created a module in Google Classroom with a series of articles and examples that teachers could begin working through asynchronously. We then met as a full staff to discuss quality projects and then as departments to begin planning those lessons and units. The Google Sheet attached identifies the staff members who are in our defined program and who have participated in our PBL/STEM Training. At the high school, 24 out of 24 teachers (100%) have been trained in PBL/STEM.
Since 2019, East Washington Schools have been on a mission to support each building in its pursuit of STEM Certification. The work has scaled well, starting at the elementary, then moving to the middle school and now the high school. The document below outlines the timeline of our program development and implementation of our STEM Program.
