Why do contemporary readers still adore Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice? What is it about this character that makes him so appealing to female readers across decades? 

Derived from such questions, our presentation compares the representation of Mr Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and 141 fan fictions published on AO3 (Archive of Our Own). Applying emotional analysis to sentences that include Mr Darcy, it investigates the proportion of the eight emotions (anger, disgust, fear, sadness, surprise, anticipation, joy, trust) Darcy demonstrates in each work. 

To easily comprehend the results through a visual aid, the study employs clustering to categorise the original work and fanfictions into three groups based on their emotional proportion. This research aims to capture whether contemporary female desires surrounding masculinity depicted in romance narratives have changed or remained equal over 200 years.

현대의 독자들이 여전히 『오만과 편견』의 다아시를 사랑하는 이유는 무엇일까? 무엇이 다아시를 수십 년에 걸쳐 여성 독자들에게 매력적인 존재로 만드는가? 

이러한 질문에서 출발하여, 본 연구는 제인 오스틴의 『오만과 편견』과 AO3(Archive of Our Own)에 게재된 141편의 팬픽션에 나타난 다아시의 재현 양상을 비교·분석한다. 다아시가 등장하는 문장을 대상으로 감정 분석을 적용하여, 각 작품에서 그가 표현하는 여덟 가지 감정(분노, 혐오, 공포, 슬픔, 놀람, 기대, 기쁨, 신뢰)의 비율을 검토한다.

나아가 분석 결과를 시각적으로 용이하게 파악하기 위해, 본 연구는 감정 비율을 기준으로 원작과 팬픽션을 세 개의 클러스터로 분류하는 클러스터링 방법을 활용한다. 이를 통해 로맨스 서사에서 재현되는 남성에 대한 여성의 욕망이 지난 200여 년 동안 변화했는지, 혹은 지속되어 왔는지를 포착하고자 한다.
