The Ewha AI Digital Humanities Lab pursues an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to integrate humanities scholarship with digital research methodologies. By combining traditional humanistic inquiry with computational tools, the Lab critically examines how digital approaches can foster new research questions and deeper insights into cultural phenomena and literary works. 

The Lab organizes intensive workshops during summer and winter vacations and conducts semester-long research projects, providing students with hands-on experience in digital humanities methodologies. Its research activities span a wide chronological range, from classical texts to modern and contemporary works, with a particular emphasis on building and curating textual archives.

Its projects explore questions such as: Are there recurring patterns of topic across collections of gothic texts? Why do contemporary readers continue to feel drawn to emotionally reserved male characters, such as Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice? Can we identify structural patterns in character network within 18th-century novels authored by female? 

이화 AI 디지털 인문학 랩은 인문학 연구와 디지털 연구 방법론을 융합하는 학제 간 연구 기관입니다. 본 연구실은 전통적인 인문학적 탐구와 컴퓨테이셔널 도구를 결합하여, 디지털 접근이 문화 현상과 문학 작품을 이해하는 데 있어 어떻게 새로운 연구 질문을 생성하고 더 깊은 통찰을 제공할 수 있는지를 모색합니다. 

이화 AI 디지털 인문학 랩은 여름·겨울 방학 기간 동안 집중 워크숍과 학기 단위의 연구 프로젝트를 통해 학생들에게 디지털 인문학 방법론에 대한 실질적인 연구 경험을 제공하고 있습니다. 이뤄지는 연구는 고전 텍스트부터 현대 및 동시대 작품에 이르기까지 폭넓은 시기적 범위를 포괄하고 있으며, 특히 아카이브를 구축하고 이를 분류 및 정제하는 것에 중점을 두고 있습니다.

단순한 자료 축적을 넘어, 이화 디지털인문학 랩은 디지털 코퍼스를 적극적으로 분석 도구로 활용함으로써 가까이 읽기(close reading)와 멀리서 읽기 (distant reading) 간의 경계를 확장하고 있습니다. 

연구 프로젝트에서는 다음과 같은 질문들을 탐구합니다: 고딕 문학에서 반복적으로 나타나는 주제적 패턴이 존재하는가? 현대 독자들은 왜 『오만과 편견』의 Mr. Darcy와 같은 감정을 절제한 남성 인물에 여전히 매력을 느끼는가? 18세기 여성 작가가 집필한 소설들에서 인물 네트워크의 구조적 패턴을 발견할 수 있는가?

이와 같은 질문을 답하기 위해 구성원들은 R, AntConc, Gephi, 토픽모델링, 클러스터링, RAG 기법 등 다양한 방법론을 익히며, 계산적 분석을 인문학적 문제의식과 결합하여 전통적 문학 해석의 깊이를 더하고 있습니다.

2004년 인문전산학 연구모임으로 설립된 본 연구실은 이후 지속적으로 발전해 왔으며, 현재는 한국 디지털 인문학 연구 분야를 선도하는 기관으로 자리매김하고 있습니다.
