Grading and Policies

Grading

All core English classes (Elements of Writing, Elements of Literature, English 10, English 11, and English 12) utilize a common grading structure for consistency's sake.

  • Summer Reading: 5%

  • Coursework/Homework: 10%

  • Tests/Quizzes: 35%

  • Writing/Projects: 40%

  • Independent Reading: 10%

Policies

In harmony with our school's core values of Respect and Responsibility, all English classes enforce the following policies:

  • Late Work: All assignments are due at the time that class meets on the published due date. Work that is not submitted on time (with the exception of Major Course Assessments) is subject to a lateness penalty of 10% per school day. In the case of excused medical absence, extensions may be granted at the discretion of the course instructor. If these assignments are not turned in after five days, they are assigned a grade of zero. Students who fail to submit Major Course Assessments (i.e. assignments which count for more than 6% of their term averages) are subject to the consequences outlined in School Committee Policy 7800.

  • Textbooks: Each student is issued one (1) consumable textbook. Students own their textbooks, and may write in them. If they lose this textbook, they must provide financial compensation before being issued another one. They will also be provided with access to the same textbook in electronic format. Any trade books issued to students are the property of the English Department, and students are responsible for their care. Students who lose or damage the trade books which have been entrusted to them are responsible for their replacement. Students may do so either by financially compensating the English Department for replacement costs, or by providing comparable replacements. All textbooks are due at the time of the final exam. If a student fails to turn in or replace a book at the time of the exam, the exam will be rescheduled until restitution has been made.
