Course Description
The course analyzes Philippine history from multiple perspectives through the lens of selected primary sources coming from various disciplines and different genres. Students are given opportunities to analyze the author’s background and main arguments, compare different points of view, identify biases, and examine the pieces of evidence presented in the document. The discussions will tackle traditional topics in history and other interdisciplinary themes that will deepen and broaden their understanding of Philippine political, economic, cultural, social, scientific, and religious history. Priority is given to primary materials that could help students develop their analytical and communication skills. The end goal is to develop the historical and critical consciousness of the students so that they will become versatile, articulate, broad-minded, morally upright, and responsible citizens.
This course includes mandatory topics on the Philippine Constitution, agrarian reform, and taxation.
About me
Greetings! My name is Kay Bathala H. Santos, and I am honored to serve as a college instructor at Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) in the vibrant city of Tacloban. My academic journey and professional passions have led me to a fulfilling career where I wear multiple hats—each one enhancing my dedication to education and community engagement.
Educational and Professional Background
At EVSU, I primarily teach General Education courses, including Readings in Philippine History, Contemporary World, Art Appreciation, Life and Works of Rizal, and Understanding the Self. These subjects are not just academic disciplines to me; they are avenues to inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation of our rich cultural heritage.
Beyond my teaching responsibilities, I am the team lead of the Social Media Production at our University Multimedia Development Center (UMDC). This role allows me to merge my love for education with my passion for photography and videography. As the social media curator for EVSU, I strive to create content that reflects our university's core values: Excellence, Value-laden, Service-driven, and Unity in Diversity.
My Mission
In my classroom and through our university’s social media platforms, I aim to be a catalyst for positive change. Education, to me, is a powerful tool that can transform lives and communities. By fostering an inclusive and engaging learning environment, I hope to empower my students to become thoughtful, informed, and compassionate individuals ready to make a difference in the world.
Personal Interests
Outside the academic sphere, I enjoy exploring the art of storytelling through different media. Whether it's capturing a moment with my camera or crafting a compelling video, I believe in the power of visuals to convey meaningful messages. This hobby not only complements my professional work but also enriches my personal growth.
A Message to My Students
To my students, past, present, and future: I am here to support your educational journey and personal development. My goal is to help you see the interconnectedness of our world, appreciate the richness of our history, and recognize the potential within yourselves. Together, we can strive for excellence, embrace our values, and contribute to a diverse and unified community.
