New Tech Institute - Wireless Communications Device (WCD) Policy
Important Information about the EVSC and New Tech Wireless Communication Device Policy
Indiana State Law has banned using wireless communication devices in school during instructional time. As a result, students cannot use or have visible cell phones, smart watches, AirPods, or earbuds during class. If a teacher sees a student with any of these devices during class time, the student will go to the office for the device to be held until the end of the day.
- Students may use devices during lunch, and during the two-minute passing periods between classes.
- This policy is a significant change and will require some adjustment. We appreciate your cooperation and patience.
- You can access the policy on the "Wireless Device Policy" tab at the top of this newsletter.
- Wired headphones or earbuds are allowable with the permission of the teacher (not during instruction or collaboration).
Policy Background and Goals
Our administration and staff are dedicated to ensuring that every student graduates prepared for future success, and we recognize the power of technology as an educational tool to achieve this vision. However, in recent years, the improper use of wireless technology has become a distraction to student learning and a means of bullying and harassment. Our goal is to support our students, staff, and families while maintaining a safe and focused learning environment. In response to recent legislative changes regarding the use of wireless devices, we will be implementing the following guidelines beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.
Personal Wireless Communication Devices (“WCDs”) include, but are not limited to: cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, headphones, airpods, tablet and laptop computers, gaming devices, etc.
Note: WCD does not include school-issued electronic devices utilized for learning.
Board policy 4307 prohibits the use of WCDs during instructional time with the following exceptions:
In the event of an emergency
To manage the student’s healthcare
When included in a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan
Special Circumstances
If a special circumstance arises requiring a temporary adjustment to this policy, parents/guardians should promptly contact the student’s counselor (before the student arrives in class with their WCD) with the request. Upon approval, counselors will communicate with all teachers if a student needs to keep their WCD for that day.
In the event of an emergency, parents/guardians should contact the office at 812-435-* and a message will be delivered to the student.
Student Expectations
Use of WCDs is not permitted in the classroom during instructional time.
Students seen or heard with a WCD during instructional time will be sent to the office.
WCDs will be permitted before and after school and in the cafeteria during lunch.
WCDs are not required at school. EVSC is not responsible for the theft, loss, damage, or unauthorized use of a student’s WCD.
WCD use is not permitted in school offices or conference rooms.
WCDs shall not be used for recording or taking pictures of another person without prior permission. Students caught in violation may be subject to discipline.
Administrative Guidelines
· Students seen or heard with a WCD during instructional time will be sent directly to the office.
· Teachers will not confiscate WCDs from students; students will be directed to report immediately to the office.
· If an administrator is in a classroom and observes a student with a WCD, the administrator will follow the same procedure and ask the student to report immediately to the office.
· The WCD will be powered off and handed over to office personnel to be stored there for the remainder of the day. Once the WCD is secured, the student will return to class, as long as the student remains cooperative.
· Further disciplinary action may be taken for non-compliance and repeat offenses.
· Each time there is a violation, attempts will be made to reach the student's family/guardian using contact information on file. Consequences for violations of this policy may depend on the nature of the violation; extreme behaviors that break the law, engage in bullying or harassment of other student(s) may result in suspension/expulsion.
The following are potential questions families may have about the New Tech HS WCD Policy.
Please remember, the goal of this policy is to support our students, staff, and families while maintaining
a safe and focused learning environment.
Q: What will happen if my student violates the policy?
A: It is our goal for every student to be engaged academically while in class, not to punish them. The
first violation will likely result in a conversation with an administrator and securing the phone in the
office for the remainder of the school day. However, more severe consequences will be administered
for multiple offenses or if the student does not cooperate with staff.
Q: How can I get in touch with my student in case of an emergency?
A: Call the office and a message will be sent to your student. Text your student and they can respond
during lunch or after the school day.
Q: What if my student has a medical reason to have their cell phone (Ex. diabetic)?
A: Contact the nurse to establish reasonable expectations for when they need to use their device. The
nurse will communicate with teachers to ensure the student has appropriate access to their device.
Q: What if my student needs to contact an employer, coach, family member?
A: Phones can be used before or after school and during lunch periods.
