Middle School Musical 2022-2023

Class Overview

A cast (by audition) of 24 students and 2 student stage managers rehearse a middle school version of the musical INTO THE WOODS. Each cast member develops skills in singing and music preparation, dance and choreography, staging and scene work, and character development in preparation for a weekend of performances. When learning songs, students strengthen their connection to breathing and to diction, and increase vocal projection. They also expand their vocal ranges with an understanding of different voice registers (head, chest, and mix), practice listening to downbeats, tempo changes and applying dynamics. Learning a sequence of choreographed dance steps is a large part of the rehearsal process. Moving to the beat, developing a physical core, shifting weight from foot to foot, and alternating arms and feet are some of the skills practiced. Students create characters by exploring movement through physical gestures, physical levels (high, medium, low) and by moving in a variety of tempos (slow, medium, fast). Students learn staging and theater terminology; practice energized exits and entrances; build skills in listening and responding to rehearsed cues, and reacting to their surroundings. The class encourages students to focus on teamwork on stage and off as a key ingredient to the whole production. Furthermore, student build an awareness for sharing the stage with others, building a balanced stage picture, taking turns, and giving focus to others on stage. Homework often involves reviewing music, staging, choreography, and dialogue outside of class.
