As part of the capstone experience, students connecting with people and organizations who are already doing social justice work in their communities. Students benefit by learning firsthand about opportunities for civic engagement, the needs of organizations, and the ethics of working with communities. In DESJ 297: From Inquiry to Civic Action, classes typically collaborate on a service activity or project with a campus or community partner and reflect on connections to the class curriculum. In addition, course instructors support students in matching with a community partner with share interests. From there, students may collaborate with those organizations to determine how they can make a meaningful, specific contribution to the organization or community that reflects what they have learned in the DESJ program. Representatives from community partner organizations have also come to capstone classes and events to present or give insight into their organizations' work.
