Curriculum

This class will be based on the Common Core Language and Writing Standards.

  • Students will be using two online notebooks: one for grammar (parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections) and one for language (sentence structures, punctuation, etc.). Both can be accessed in the Google Classroom,

  • Spelling We will be doing spelling on Spelling City this year. The words will be posted on Spelling city the first day of the week, and I will assign activities each day. The final test will be taken on Friday right in Spelling City. I will post the url for Spelling City as soon as the office gives me permission.

  • Writing will consist of essay writing, John Collins’s writing, and journals. We will begin the year with writing complete sentences and then move to text dependent analysis. In addition, students will be asked to complete short writing assignments to assess skills.

  • What’s Going On In This Picture? This activity is from The New York Times. There will be a different picture each week to “analyze.” Students will be asked to answer questions daily about the picture. On Thursday, they will use all of the information from the previous days to write an analytical paragraph that answers the question and is supported by evidence. We will do one picture for 4-6 weeks.

  • Spiral Review - Once grammar and language standards have been covered, we will do a spiral review of the skills.

Grading

Grading will be based on the following areas:

  • Weekly spelling assignments and Spelling tests.

  • Writing essays

  • Short writing assignments (Type One & Type Two)

  • Short quizzes on grammar and language skills
