Citizens of Evanston for Scouting (CES) is a community organization dedicated to the direct support of scouting in Evanston. We're all volunteers with decades of scouting experience between us who believe in promoting the values of scouting and outdoor experiences among our community's children and teenagers.
CES is an Illinois Incorporated, 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization located in Evanston, IL.
Start scouting! We help with the paperwork and the program idea. We can coordinate you with other leaders and people with decades of experience.
Managing finances -- use electronic payments without having to worry about a personal account.
The program -- making it easy to do scouting activities across the whole range of children and teenagers
The paperwork -- making it easy to navigate the various bureaucracies associated with regional and national scouting organizations!
Direct donations -- as a 501(c)(3) we make it easy for supporters to support a troop or pack directly, and support employer matching programs.
Recruitment -- going to school picnics, activities open to the community, and materials ready for you to use
Support for fundraising -- no need to fill your living room with popcorn or your basement with cookie boxes!
... and much more! If you have any ideas just reach out!
What does it cost? Nothing extra! We're volunteer-run and we provide services at-cost!
Chris Hersee is a long-time resident of Evanston and is well known within the scouting community, both in the area and with the larger Northwest Counsel of BSA Scouting. Chris has been involved in Evanston Scouting for over 25 years, with two sons involved in scouting as youth and has a chance with his two grandsons to show them fun in the outdoors as well!
Chris spends time with the older scouts in Troop 916 as the Advancement Chair, and is able to see close up all the successes of Scouts in Troop 916 as the scouts advance in rank, earn merit badges, and learn to cook for not only themselves but others as well.
Working with younger Cub Scouts keeps us all young, and Chris helps many Scouting Families build Pinewood Derby Cars, and also helps many other Cub Scout Groups (Packs) with running Pinewood Derby Races from January through March with excellent help from Troop 916.
When the weather cooperates, Chris also sets up multiple air and water rocket launchers for scouts and schools combined with the youth building their own rocket and signing the rocket before launching into the sky.

Chris Arehart moved to Evanston ten years ago with his wife and young son and has never looked back. While they did not have previous experience with scouting, Chris and his wife Elizabeth were drawn into the community through their son Henry’s interest in the activity. Chris and Elizabeth quickly became parent leaders in the Cub Scout Pack, shepherding one of the largest packs of Webelos II in recent memory through the Arrow of Light. During the day, Chris is an executive with a large insurance company, splitting his time between Chicago and his home in Evanston. In his spare time, Chris enjoys woodworking, music (with anyone that will take him up on it!) and looking after his 110-year-old home, as there’s always something that needs repairing.
