How parents can help with Phonemic Awareness
Ask your child if they hear the rhyme in various words. They put thumb up/thumb down.
Tell your child you want them to recognize a specific letter in a word. Example: “I’m going to say words with the short e sound. Put your thumb up if you hear the short e sound...pet, hen, egg…bat.. Bat does not have the short e sound."
2. Play word games where you can ask them to name things that start with a specific letter, and they will say that sound.
Segmenting words - Ask your child to clap or move a tile forward when they say the sounds in a word. Example, "The word is mop" The child claps each sound, or moves a tile forward for "m" "o" "p" and sounds it out. Then says the word afterwards.
