Phonemic Awareness is knowing the sounds of language.

Before children learn to read, they need to become aware of how the sounds in words work.

Practice Tip:

  1. Tell your child the sound you want them to identify. Then say 3 words (2 include the sound, 1 does not). See if they can differentiate hearing the sound versus not hearing the sound.

  2. Have your child say the sounds and "segment" the sounds. I say "top" what are the sounds? The child says "t" "o" "p." In this activity, the child can push up a tile or clap their hands for each sound.
