The Approaches to Learning (ATLs) are divided in to five categories: thinking skills, research skills, communication skills, social skills, and self-management skills. These skills are then divided into sub-skills which can be modified or added to, then used as learning expectations for the students.
During development conferences and report card season, the ATLs are reflected upon. Students and teachers reflect on areas of improvement in addition to skills that need to be developed.
