We are writing to inform you about a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision—Mahmoud v. Taylor—issued on June 27, 2025, which ruled that public schools must notify parents in advance and offer an opt-out option for instruction that “substantially burdens” sincerely held religious beliefs. While the case originated outside of our district, its principles underscore the importance of honoring parental rights and religious freedom in public education.
At EUREKA UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT, we pride ourselves on a transparent curriculum review and adoption process. To ensure families feel informed and respected, we are providing an opt-out form. Families who believe a specific lesson conflicts with their sincerely held religious beliefs may complete this form. We kindly ask that parents and guardians be specific in describing the content they object to so that we can review the request accurately and ensure the appropriate content is addressed.
This is our OPT OUT FORM.
Students will not be subject to disciplinary action, academic penalty, or any other sanction because of this opt-out. For students whose parents or guardians request an opt-out, schools will provide alternative educational activities as appropriate.
The Opt Out Form will ask parents and guardians to answer three questions so we can fully address the concern. Please ensure that you are specific in your answers. We will provide an alternate academic activity for your student.
Upon completion, please allow 3-5 days while we review your responses.
We invite you to explore the core curriculum for the EUSD. As partners in your child's education, we want to ensure you have clear and direct access to what they are learning throughout the year.
Please visit our core curriculum review page to learn more. There, you can select Language Arts, Math, or Science to view a detailed scope and sequence from our publishing partners. This resource outlines the specific topics and skills your child will be taught in each subject.
