Below is the data we collected for each batch. We recorded the time it took from when the ingredients were put in the kettle to when the kettle was emptied. We then measured the amount of popped popcorn. Then, we found the mean, median, and mode of each to use in our final calculations.
Final Calculations
To make 400 1.5-ounce (3 cup) bags of popcorn, we need 1,200 cups of popped popcorn (400*3=1,200).
With an average of 48 cups of popcorn per batch, we need to make 25 batches of popcorn (1200/48=25).
If we round the average time to 4 minutes, it will take 100 minutes of popping time (25*4=100).
To make 25 batches, we will need:
1 gallon of popping oil (makes 32 batches) - $21.99
2 10-lb. bags of popcorn kernels (makes 15 batches each, 30 batches total) - $13.99 each, $27.98 total
1 box Flavacol salt (makes 70 batches) - $4.99
2 boxes of 1.5-ounce bags (350 count, 700 count total) - $10.99 each, $21.98 total
Total Cost - $76.94
