Math 1A Functions

Unit 3 Big Ideas

5) Linear functions have a distinct pattern of change (constant rate of change) that can be seen in tables, graphs, rules, and contexts for these functions. This pattern of changes makes linear functions useful in modeling a variety of real-life situations. 6) Linear equations can be written to solve specific questions about real-life situations. Solutions to equations are values that make the equation true, and those solutions can be found using tables, graphs, technology, or algebraic manipulation.

Cost of Living Project

For this project you will be planning your financial beginnings as you begin living independently away from your family. This will include balancing the funds for your cost of living with the amount you earn at a minimum wage starting job.

How much would you need to save up to survive independently for 5 years?

Part 1 Location

Pick a place you would want to live. Your cost of living directly relates to where you choose to live. Some cities and states cost a lot more to live in than others.

Part 2 Expenses

Figure out the costs of the following expenses per month. Please search up accurate values associated with the area you would end up living in. It will give you a better idea of how much things actually cost when you start living on your own.

Part 3 Total Expenses

Calculate the total expense per month

Part 4 Savings and Salary

How much money do you currently have saved

Create a table of how much income you have if you started a minimum wage job at $15.00/hour (if you currently have a job, please use your actual salary)

Part 5 Long Term Living

How much income would you have after working for 5 years? Show how you were able to calculate this value. (Create a graph or algebraic rule to calculate this)

How much would it cost to survive independently for 5 years? Show how you were able to calculate this value. (Use your graph or algebraic rule to calculate this)

Part 6 Savings

If your cost to survive was more than the amount of income after 5 years, you wouldn’t be able to survive without saving money first. Calculate how long you would need to work to save up to cover the missing expense.

If your cost to survive was less than the amount of income after 5 years, calculate the lowest wage you could earn and still cover the cost of your living expense.

Part 7 Reflection

Reflect on what you have learned throughout this project. What have you learned about the minimum wage and its effect on working people? Should the government mandate a higher minimum wage for all states? Use your findings in this project to support your decision.

Part 8 Grading

What grade do you deserve to earn in this class? Explain why you deserve that grade.
