Review ALEKS Skills to Prepare for Knowledge Check!

As you enter...

Get out your binder, pencil, chromebook, and a whiteboard (if you want to use one), and head to your assigned seat to start the do now!

[8 min] DO NOW: Check out the problems on the board.

Silent Think Time (3 min): In your binder or on a whiteboard, try to solve the problems on the board, showing your thinking!
Mix and Mingle (2 min): Walk around the room and find a partner to check in with. Be sure to share HOW you tried to solve and ask any questions you may have about their process. Head to the circle when you are done!
Whole Group Modeling (3 min): I will explain the problem and how to solve it OR ask a student who feels confident to explain their thinking. You should compare our solution to your work and ask any questions/make any changes you need.

[2 min] DO NEXT: Take the next two minutes to get out your chromebook and login to ALEKS Math. If you did not yet finish your test, I will give that back so you can finish it! Once you are done, you should review skills on ALEKS Math.

[30 min] INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: Login to ALEKS Math through Clever (puzzle piece - blue c - red McGraw Hill App - ALEKS Math). I will model how to get to review skills in case you forgot how to do so.

Look through the review skills and identify ones you want to practice prior to the knowledge check. Jot down any notes that may help you remember for tomorrow!

Finish Unit 2 Test & Learn ALEKS Skills

As you enter...

Grab your binder and head to your assigned seat! Then start the do now quietly in the do now section of your binder.

[8 min] DO NOW: Check out the problem on the board.

Silent Think Time (3 min): In your binder, try to solve the problem on the board, showing your thinking! You may recognize this problem from your assignment or skills on ALEKS.
Mix & Mingle (2 min): Mix around the room until I say mingle! Find one person to talk to about your process. Be sure to share HOW you solved the problem, not just your answer. If you disagree, discuss to try to understand why. Once you are done, sit in a circle by the whiteboards!
Whole Group Modeling (3 min): I will explain the problem and how to solve it OR ask a student who feels confident to explain their thinking. You should compare our solution to your work and ask any questions/make any changes you need.

Unit 2 Test | Solving Problems with Percentages

As you enter...

Grab your binder and head to your assigned seat! Then start the do now quietly in the do now section of your binder.

[5 min] DO NOW: Get Prepared! Make sure you have all your notes out and ready! You also should have your Chromebook and a writing utensil. Once you have all your materials, you can try the problem on the board!

[5 min] WHOLE GROUP INSTRUCTIONS: Today we will be taking our Unit 2 Test on Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides. Here are the instructions for the test.

Please use a pencil and show all of your work directly on the test.
You may use a calculator but need to show your steps on paper.
You may use your notes during the test!
If you are stuck or confused about what a question is asking, please ask for help.
You may skip a question and come back to it.
It should be silent throughout the period so others can focus on their test.
You have today’s class time to finish the test. If you do not finish in class today, you will have time to finish tomorrow in class. You cannot finish the test at home.

[40 min] INDEPENDENT: Unit 2 Test The test is on paper. When you finish, please turn your test in to me! You may then go onto ALEKS Math and learn skills while you wait for others to finish.

Make sure you have out what you need for class (binder, writing utensil, chromebook). Grab a whiteboard and marker if you prefer.

When everyone has slanted screens and are quiet, we will review Kahoot expectations.

[15 MIN] WHOLE GROUP: Together we will play a Kahoot to review for our upcoming test on solving & writing equations. Please make sure you are writing the problems down, as it will help you attend to precision AND you will need to show your work on the test! You may use a calculator. We will discuss each question/answer after the timer is up, so be sure to pay attention and ask questions if you have them!

[2 min] TRANSITION TIME: The rest of the time you have to catch up on missing assignments and ask any questions you may still have. Use the two minute transition time to get whatever you need (planner for multiplication chart, binder if you need notes, whiteboard and marker) and then login to ALEKS Math.

[15 min] INDEPENDENT TIME: This is time for you to independently do what you need to do to prepare for the test.

Check to see if all your assignments from Unit 2 are completed to an 80% or higher on ALEKS Math - if not, work on these! Start with 2.1 and work your way up.
If your assignments are completed, learn skills on ALEKS. Search "decimal" to focus on things that we have been learning in class recently. This will help you prepare for the test.

[3 min] TICKET OUT: Be prepared to share what you accomplished during work time and any next steps you have to be prepared for the test! Pack up and then wait to be dismissed.

Lesson 2.5: Write Equations

Grab your binder and head to your assigned seat as you enter, then start the do now quietly in your binder!

[3 min] INDEPENDENT: Use the first three minutes to write a response to the problem on the board. Make sure to include detail in your response!
[2 min] MIX AND MINGLE: Walk around the room until I say mingle! When I say mingle, stop and find someone near you to share your thinking with. When you are done, head back to your table.
[5 min] WHOLE GROUP: I will use my popsicle sticks to call on someone to share their thinking. As a group we will decide if we agree or disagree. Finally we will share other ways of thinking about the problem before transitioning into the lesson.

Hold Ups: I will show you a situation on the board. Define the variable, then write the equation on your white board. Hold it up when you think you are ready! We will then discuss the different answers until we come to an agreement.

[7 min] GUIDED PRACTICE: Partner Practice + Multiple Choice

I will give you a playing card.
Find the partner who has the same card but opposite color (EX: I have a red 2, I need to find someone with a black 2).
Find a spot to sit with that person and grab two sheets from me.
There are four multiple choice problems. You must identify which equation represents the situation for each.
Choose two to finish solving, and write your answer in a complete sentence.
When you think you are done, raise your hand and I will check it!
You can then start your homework on ALEKS Math.

If you are stuck or confused about what a question is asking, please ask for help
You may skip a question and come back to it.

Model/Explore: Together we will look at some rare/confusing examples to see what type of number you think they are. We will then prove using our definitions and what we know about other properties of math! Be sure to record these in your notes in case they come up later.
Stand and Decide: I will show you a number. You should go to one side of the room if you think the number is rational and the other side if you think it is irrational. We will discuss why until we all agree, then move on to the next!

[3 min] Mix and Mingle Walk around the room until I say mingle with. Find someone near you and share two of the things you thought were important for having an effective learning environment in math, and share why you chose those! Once you and your partner have both shared, come sit in a circle by the whiteboards.
[10 min] Whole Group Conversation Each person will share one guideline they thought was important for having an effective learning community in math class. This will help us understand what our peers need to feel comfortable learning. At the end, I will have people share anything they wanted to change OR to add that would make the expectations better or more clear.
- Further Discussion: Think about the purpose of Math class. Why are these expectations important to you? What will happen if we follow them? What will happen if we don't follow them?
[2 min] Follow Up: After having this conversation with all of the math classes, I will create a consolidated list of classroom guidelines we should be following so all can learn effectively and feel comfortable in math class. We will then vote to ratify the Math Classroom Guidelines!

TRANSITION [3 min]: On Wednesdays during 5 day weeks, we have math guided work time! If you have not yet finished your assignments from this unit, you would work on those first. If you have finished your assignments, you would use this time to learn skills toward your weekly goal. Since we are getting our first assignment tomorrow, you can use the time today to either finish your knowledge check OR learn skills and take notes!

[10 min] CIRCLE UP: I will use popsicle sticks to call on a few people to share out what are benefits to note taking. Together we will then read this article and see if there are any connections, extensions, or challenges to what we already identified!

The Knowledge Check is a test that evaluates the math skills you currently have in your toolbox. Please take this assessment seriously, as it tells the program what skills you have mastered and what skills you still need to learn. This will guide your independent learning throughout the year. Since you are at the beginning of this course, it is okay if there are questions you don’t know how to do. Please try your best to answer or click the “I haven’t learned this yet” option. Here are other guidelines to follow…

You are encouraged to use paper and pencil or a whiteboard and marker
You may ONLY use a calculator if ALEKS provides one for you. This will be an icon on the right side of the screen.
All other tabs should be closed.
You may not use headphones or other personal devices (once we get into learning skills you may, but not during the knowledge check)
Please read all instructions carefully and check your answers. Once you hit next, you cannot go back through previous questions.

Discuss Classroom Structure/Math Tech Orientation

Head to your assigned tables from yesterday, then start the do now!

[5 min] DO NOW: Write a response to the following prompts in your do now section or on a whiteboard. Try to come up with at least two responses to each prompt, but you can add more!

What things make learning math easier for you? How do you prefer to learn new things in math?

Please continue to jot down ideas until the timer has run out!

[3 min] MIX AND MINGLE: Move around the room until I say mingle. Once I say mingle, find someone to share with who does not sit at your table. We will mingle three different times. When I turn off and on the lights, find a new partner! After the third time, come and circle up!

[15 min] WHOLE GROUP DEBRIEF: I will call on different people using popsicle sticks to share their thoughts about any of the categories. Once I have called on 4 people using popsicle sticks, I will ask for volunteers to share ideas that have not yet been shared. When we have finished sharing, I will explain how this connects to the structure of Math class at Étude:

1. Whole Group Lessons: Focus on grade level learning targets & exploration - Monday/Thursdays

Number Talk & Organize Materials

Set your things in your assigned seat, then sit in or in front of the semi-circle by the boards and start your silent think time for number talk!

[10 min] DO NOW: Number Talk You do not need to bring anything to the semi-circle with you! You may notice there are manipulatives in the center of the circle, feel free to use them!

Silent Think Time (3 min): Try to solve the problem on the board as many ways you can! Show me your sign (fist, thumb sideways, thumb up).
Turn and Talk (1 min): Both partners should share their processes!
Share Out Different Ways to Solve (6 min): I will call on volunteers to share out their thinking.

[7 min] DEBRIEF: A lot of mathematics revolves around problem solving. We can be much more successful in mathematics if we have multiple ways to approach or solve a problem. We will discuss the 5 representations of mathematical thinking so that you can use these in the future.

Getting to Know Our Math Class!

As you enter, head to the table I send you to and start the do now!

[3 min] DO NOW: Follow these instructions as we start class...

Grab a marker from the bin.
On the front of the popsicle stick, write your name in large letters
On the back of the popsicle stick, draw or write something you think the group should know about you.

When you are done, come form a semi-circle in the front of the room.

[10 min] GATHERING: Stuffed Toy Toss We will toss Reggie until each person has shared their name and symbol/words. This will help us get to learn a bit about each other and transition into our next activity!

[5 min] WHOLE GROUP INSTRUCTIONS: To get to know more about your peers today, we are going to use a mix and mingle to identify things you maybe didn't know about other people.

On your sheet, there are different characteristics listed. You have to 'find someone who' each of those things applies to and have them sign your sheet.
You cannot just hand the person your sheet and have them fill it out, you have to ask them specific questions until you find something that applies to them.
You can only sign someone's sheet in no more than two different spaces.
You need a writing utensil - if you did not bring one, you can grab one from the first drawer.

[15 min] MIX N MINGLE - FIND SOMEONE WHO: Spend this time mixing and mingling until you have had someone sign every box in your sheet! If you finish early, come back to the semi-circle.

[10 min] WHOLE GROUP DEBRIEF: Once everyone has returned to the semi-circle, we will share out something new you learned about a peer or something that surprised you. We will also discuss why this activity is important to understanding how our math community works!
