ForceSMIP Hackathon

August 29-31, 2023

The ForceSMIP Hackathon took place on August 29-31, 2023. It's aim was to stimulate participation in ForceSMIP (see About and How to Participate tabs for more details), especially among early-career researchers. There were lectures on topics related to climate model large ensembles, statistical methods to analyze climate datasets, and machine learning, as well as plenty of time for participants to work with each other on statistical method contributions for ForceSMIP.

Goals: We hope that hackathon participants will:

1.  Gain a foundational understanding of the relative contributions of unforced and forced contributions to climate trends at regional and global scales and the importance of distinguishing between them

2.  Learn about single model initial-condition large ensembles (SMILEs) and traditional and state-of-the-art methods to estimate the forced response from single members of a SMILE and/or observations, including exposure to Python/R notebooks demonstrating their usage

3.  Network with peers and learn from other participants with experience in statistical and physically based methods for climate science

4.  Identify groups and ideas that could lead to a contribution to the ForceSMIP project, which will use SMILEs as a testbed to systematically evaluate participant-submitted methods for estimating the forced response in single ensemble members and apply them to observations

5.  Find the hackathon to be an inclusive learning environment

Travel support was provided for a limited number of early-career participants who traveled in person to either hackathon location, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and Swiss National Science Foundation.

Thanks to everyone who joined us in Zurich or Boulder!

Agenda

Note that a limited virtual participation option is available. Virtual participants will be given access to recorded lectures and can join for a handful of plenary discussion sessions noted on the agenda.

Important Dates

Confirmed Lectures and Topics

All talks were recorded. Please reach out to a ForceSMIP organizer for access to the recordings. B or Z indicates whether the lecturer will be in person in Boulder or Zurich, respectively.

At each node, we also had informal tutorials on the ‘nuts and bolts’ related to the hackathon approach, such as: making a training, testing, and validation set; how to cross validate; and how to write reproducible and well-documented code.
