Chemical Pollution in the Great Lakes

Learn about the chemical pollution facing our most important local natural resource: Lake Michigan!
Lake Michigan and the rest of the Great Lakes are vital to the cities surrounding them, including Chicago. Not only are they the source of our water, but they also serve as a substantial source of food, and, most importantly, they represent the ecological backbone of the entire region of the Upper Midwest. Hundreds of plant and animal species would not exist without them. However, chemical pollutants such as polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAs” or "forever chemicals"), phosphate-based fertilizers, and heavy metals pose a threat to the lakes and all who depend on them. This website presents a range of possible approaches to combat the effects of these pollutants, from scientific efforts such as Zeolite-based filtration and phytoextraction, to steps that individuals can take to reduce their own pollution and support the health of our Great Lakes. Help raise awareness about this issue and support the students of the Evanston Township High School Chemistry department in our class projects on Chemistry in Sustainability by taking a moment to learn how we can all protect our lake.
