Current Water is a donation-funded research and innovation hub working to find water conservation and water quality maintenance methods, particularly with regards to the climate crisis. They've recently found real-time water monitoring methods for the Chicago River system. From May 4-10, 2025, they'll also be holding Chicago Water Week downtown at the Shedd Aquarium to educate the public.
The ELPC is a watchdog organization for the EPA, monitoring the Great Lakes for chemical pollution. They work in both the United States and Canada, and have successfully lowered phosphate pollution around Toledo, ammonia pollution in Burns Harbor, IN, and toxic waste spill risks on Chicago's Southeast side. They're primarily known for their legal work and direct advocacy against environmentally-unfriendly corporations.
The Alliance for the Great Lakes is a nonprofit organization that works to restore and preserve the ecology and environment of the lakes. They work to promote clean water laws, reduce algae blooms, and prevent invasive species, all in an effort to conserve the wonder of the Great Lakes for future generations. They accept volunteers and work from all around the lake system, and originated in Hyde Park, Chicago!
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has a department entirely focused on the health of our Great Lakes and nearby rivers-- the same department that patented the zeolite filtration system! The Department of Freshwater Sciences is the source of groundbreaking research in water quality, pollution, and ecosystem restoration.
