Can you PLEP?

A Present Level of Educational Performance or PLEP is a part of the IEP that encompasses the current programming and performance on an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The purpose of the IEP is to establish goals and services for the upcoming year and the PLEP allows the team to reestablish a baseline to see how the student is currently doing in school. This is the foundation for which the team will develop the goals for the student.

The team should take into account the following considerations when developing the present level of performance:

Student strengths
Results of the most recent evaluation(s)
Special factors related to the child’s disability such as student’s needs in the areas of behavior, communication, limited English proficiency, visual impairments and use of assistive technology

Parental concerns
Results from state and district-wide assessments
How the student’s disability affects involvement and progress in the general education curriculum

As the PLEP is written, the team should develop performance and needs statements that:

The category of verification for the student’s disability
Summarize the above considerations
Translate information evaluations into clear and concise statements
How the child is doing in class relative to the child’s disability and how his disability is affecting his/her learning

The child’s academic achievement
The child’s social development
The child’s management needs (behavioral, life skills, academic)
What is it that the child can and cannot do at this time
