This graphic illustrates the High Ability Learning Identification Pathway for Students in Grades 4-8.
Students in these grades are able to auto-qualify for HAL via state-approved standardized assessments by meeting one of the following: 1) 95%+ on MAP ELA, Math, Reading, or Science sections; or 2) 95%+ on NSCAS ELA, Math, or Reading sections (NOT NSCAS Science, as this section is a fixed-form assessment, and not adaptive).
The next step of the pathway is for those students who don’t score 95% or above, but DO score between 75-94% on any MAP or NSCAS section listed prior. These students will take the Cognitive Assessment for Rural Schools (CARS), which has been developed by the RESTORE team. Those students who meet the cut score on the CARS will be HAL qualifiers. Those students who don’t reach the CARS cut score may move on the the next step on the pathway, which is a Teacher Rating Scale, also developed by the RESTORE team.
Once results of the teacher rating scales are compiled, those who meet the cut score will be HAL qualifiers, and those who don’t meet the cut score will not qualify for HAL, but will be given the opportunity the create a student portfolio, which they will present to a committee of district staff and RESTORE team members.
Those who choose not to pursue the portfolio option may be reassessed for HAL in future years.
