Writing Types

In academic writing, the writer may be asked to write one of these types of essays, such as an essay that compares and contrasts two topics. More often, a writer will use multiple writing types (also known as strategies, modes, or styles) within the same paper. For instance, while making an argument, a writer might describe the causes of a problem, compare and contrast possible solutions, and explain why one solution is the best.
