This first chapter introduces readers to the dystopian world of Panem, establishes the setting and atmosphere of District 12, and sets up the central conflict of the story by revealing Katniss's role as a tribute in the Hunger Games. 

Katniss Everdeen, who lives in District 12. She volunteers as a tribute to save her younger sister from participating in the games, which are a yearly event where one boy and one girl from each district are forced to fight to the death.

In this chapter, we are introduced to some of the other tributes, including Peeta Mellark, who becomes an important ally to Katniss throughout the games. We also learn about the harsh conditions of the arena and the strategies the tributes use to survive.
