“claimed their freedom” How enslaved people brought freedom to Massachusetts
During the Revolutionary Era, enslaved people claimed their own freedom through court suits, joining the Army, running away and simply claiming their freedom. Through their actions, they expanded the Revolutionary talk of political freedom to personal freedom. Here are a few of their stories of their actions in Essex County.
Presented by Jeanne Pickering, MA History, Salem State University, NorthShoreSlavery.org, and VP of the Topsfield Historical Society.
