• How does the language in the Lawrence Sentinel try to motivate Irish immigrants to vote for Mr. Beach?

• What are the barriers to political involvement among the Latinx communities, according to interviews in the “Unity” article? How are some leaders in these communities organizing for change in the late 1970s?

• What reasons does Ms. Lopez give for her decision to run for school committee? Be aware of the date of the article and the fact that Ms. Lopez is the first Latinx person to run for the committee, according to the article. What does this say about access to positions of power and change for the schools in Lawrence?

• Evaluate the factors that lead someone to become involved in politics.

• Examine how the 1995 article uses descriptions around race and gender vs individuality.

• What argument is the Lawrence American making about drawing distinctions between American-born and non-American born candidates for political office? Do these arguments resonate today? Why is it particularly important for traditionally marginalized groups to have political representation- and to own this reason for running for office?
