It's been a BUSY cold and flu season so far! As of February 12th, a week before February break, we have had lots of cases of flu, strep and stomach illness. We also have had a handful of kids with COVID. If your child has a fever or sore throat I highly recommend contacting your doctor.
I hope everyone is enjoying this lovely summer! I have reached out via ParentSquare to the families of any students I need physical exams on. As a reminder, an up-to-date physical (i.e. within the last year) is required for all students entering grades K, 1, 3 and 5. Physical exams scheduled this coming fall are acceptable, too. Just reach out to let me know what day your student is scheduled for his/her appointment.
As you enjoy outdoor summer activities please keep in mind sun safety for your children and yourselves. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily as part of your morning routine to all skin areas that will be exposed – don’t forget the backs of your hands and scalp/ears if you won’t be wearing a hat. Reapply regularly during the day if needed, especially after being in the water. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses and your lips by wearing lip balm with SPF in it. Wear wide-brimmed hats and sun protective clothing as extra safety measures or simply avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm. Above all, enjoy yourselves and have a safe and healthy summer!
Any student entering grades K, 1, 3 or 5 will need to have an up-to-date physical on file with the school nurse. Physicals dated September 2020 and after are acceptable.
Students entering 6th grade need to have a Tdap vaccine. If your student is age 10 entering 6th grade he/she has until the 11th birthday to receive this vaccine. Finally, if you have a student entering kindergarten please keep in mind kindergarten vaccine requirements. If you need additional details please contact the school nurse or your healthcare provider.
Allergy season is upon us! Allergies are no fun, even in a normal year. This year we all have the added stress of considering allergy symptoms through the lens of COVID-19. Sinus congestion, runny nose, sore throat or a cough may be symptoms of either seasonal allergies or COVID-19. If your child develops any of these symptoms consider the following things: If your child also has fever, chills or body aches these are not symptoms of allergies and you should contact your healthcare provider. If your child has itchy eyes/nose/ears or is sneezing a lot this is more than likely allergy-related. If your healthcare provider has prescribed allergy medication for your child this is a great time to make sure he/she starts taking it regularly. If your child has a history of seasonal allergies see if you can get a note from your healthcare provider. You can always contact the nurse if you are unsure of what to do!
The NYS Department of Education requires that all students in the following grades at Fremont have physical examinations: Kindergarten 1, 3, and 5. If your child is in one of these grades and you have not yet sent in a copy of his/her physical exam please do so as soon as possible. Physicals dated September 2019 or after are acceptable. If your child has not had a physical since September 2019 please reach out to your health care provider and schedule one as soon as possible.
Effective 1/31/21, all health examinations performed for school must be documented on the NYS Required Health Examination Form (or an electronic health record equivalent form) - pursuant to NYS Education Law. ONLY the approved form (or an electronic health record equivalent form) will be accepted for health exams conducted on or after 1/31/2021. Instructions for how this form is to be completed by your doctor can be found here http://www.p12.nysed.gov/sss/documents/directions-for-health-exam-form.pdf. Please print the form and the instructions for your doctor the next time your child goes for a health exam. As a reminder, health exams are required for new students in a school district and for any students entering Pre-K or Kindergarten or grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11.
