8th grade

Students in 8th grade will return to the school year having read a self-selected title relating to the idea of Choice and Voice, exploring ways individuals in society do–and do not–choose to use their voices and actions to live “lives of purpose through the development of an educated conscience.” Having read a book of their own choosing gives students the opportunity to exercise their own “voice and choice” and will set them up to contribute meaningfully to class discussions. You may refer to these titles if you wish, or peruse sites also on the link compiled by Mrs. Reddig.

Students will also read Animal Farm by George Orwell. This classic novel is an allegory that not only addresses how standing up against injustice requires listening to and acting upon an educated conscience, but also reveals the dismal consequences of inaction and indifference. Please use this document to guide your reading.

Students, as you are reading, please annotate by having a dialogue with the text of Animal Farm. You do not have to use the abbreviations on that link, but you should review the link to understand what types of things to look for while reading. Write brief summaries at the ends of chapters of both the choice book and Animal Farm. Please box at least ten potential vocabulary words from your books. We will be using them to make an 8th grade dictionary for you to use throughout the year. Give yourself a timeline, and frequently discuss your text with your family, or better yet, read with them. Bring both books (Animal Farm and your choice book) on the first day of school.
