If you can see your classroom session and you know a student is using their Chromebook and GoGuardian says they are not, I have found a few potential causes.
(1) They are not using the Google account assigned to them. Students learned that they can get around restrictions by using someone else's login. Have the student show you the login so you can see if they are using their visdtx.org account. On a school Chromebook they can only login with a visdtx.org account so make sure they are in their account and not another student's account.
(2) There are ways for students "get around" filters. They are usually found in Chrome Extensions. We have blocked all extensions except for ones that are individually requested by teachers so this should help that problem. If you are familiar with extensions, you can view them to see which one may be causing the issue. All enabled Extensions can be accessed by typing chrome://extensions in the URL address box at the top left of the Chrome Browser. Extensions can be removed on this page. Please contact Chantilly Sweet to notify her whether you find the extension or not. They can be blocked from future use.
(3) You and/or the student need to refresh. You can refresh your webpage or log out of GoGuardian and back in again. If you still can't see the student and you've made sure they are in their school account, ask them to log off and log back in. This does not happen often, but it does sometimes.
(4) All Chromebooks issued by Vernon ISD are managed by Vernon ISD. This should be displayed when you check the user name. You can also log out of the Chromebook and look at the login window. If you do not see "Managed by visdtx.org" the device has most likely been put into developer mode. The tech department will need to correct this. This one is rare but can happen.
Did you find another way the students are getting around GoGuardian? If so, please email chantilly.sweet@visdtx.org and let her know.
There are many great ways for all staff to monitor and control student devices. Sometimes more than one staff member in monitoring a device at the same time. You will be able to see the device, but another staff member has control of the device at the time.
Scheduling classes is the best way to alleviate this issue. Make sure that you schedule your classes from "bell to bell" so that they do not overlap with another session. If you Start a session manually due to schedule changes, make sure that you remember to Stop the session manually as well. The students screen will let you know who are viewing their device.
