Erica Esqueda

Mission CISD

My name is Erica Esqueda. My experience in education has lead me to hold different roles in each one I have gained perspective of different responsibilities and demands within the k-16 arena. I started off as an instructional aide, to a classroom teacher, to the reference department at the UTRGV library, and then a middle school librarian since 2014 to now. In all my work experience I have continued to grow my knowledge in instructional technologies and methods to effectively assist curriculum. In my current position as a librarian I have the incredible opportunity to foster teachers abilities in implementing practical educational technology assist the needs of their students. 

Erika Flores-Guerrero

Weslaco ISD

I have taught high school English 9th-12th, English UT on Ramps, and have taught dual-credit English 1301 and 1302 with STC for 11 years, in both Donna and PSJA ISD. I’ve been a department head, UIL and student mentoring program sponsor, English ACT/STC test-prep teacher, and I also taught for 3 year with Region One GED adult education. I am currently in my 4th year as a campus assistant principal, 2 ½ years at Raul Yzaguirre Middle School, with PSJA ISD and currently at Weslaco High School. Nothing brings more joy than to see my students succeeding, achieving their goals and flourishing in their careers for those that are already professionals. I am passionate about my career, and it brings me great joy to be in a position where I can positively impact student learning everyday. I also tremendously enjoy contributing to creating a safe, inviting, kind and joyful working space for my students, colleagues, staff and the community. 

Mariela Pena

Rio Grande City Grulla ISD

My name is Mariela Peña and I am a 2nd grade teacher at Dr. Mario Ramirez Elementary in the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD. I am passionate about education and love working with young learners. I strive to create a positive and engaging learning environment where students feel supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. I believe in using innovative teaching strategies and incorporating technology to enhance the learning experience. I am excited to share my knowledge and experiences with fellow educators at the UTECH conference and continue to grow as an educator. 

Jennifer Soto

UTRGV/Edcouch-Elsa ISD

Jennifer Soto is the Talent Search Director for the Edinburg and Willacy grants. Jennifer has served students in the region as part of the Upward Bound- Edinburg grant for the last 15 years. She is proud UB alum and knows first-hand the positive impact TRIO programs can have on students and their families. During her time with UB, she has developed expertise in serving first-generation, low-income high school students on college readiness skills, financial literacy, career exploration, and the college admissions and financial aid process. She has also worked closely with school personnel to track students' academic progress and create and implement academic intervention plans utilizing grant resources. She also played a key role in the development of the Upward Bound grant proposal that was refunded. 

Juan Carlos García

UTRGV

Juan Carlos Garcia is currently the Director of Special Programs for the UTRGV Upward Bound Math and Science Edinburg program. Juan has over 20 years of administrative experience in the areas of program management, grant management, college readiness services, coordinating STEM projects for high school students, and higher education. Juan attained his B.A degree from Texas A&M University Kingsville and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. 

Petra Lopez-Vaquera

UTRGV

Petra Lopez-Vaquera is currently the Director of Special Programs for UTRGV Upward Bound Edinburg program. Petra has 20 years experience in the areas, of program management college readiness, grant management, and higher education. Petra attained his B.A. degree and a M.A. degree from Texas A&M University Kingsville.  

Eddie Armendariz

UTRGV

I was born and raised in Brownsville. Growing up, I had a passion for learning and exploring new things. After finishing high school, I decided to pursue a degree in criminal justice at UTB/TSC. While in college, I discovered my passion for education and started working with an educational federal grant within the institution. After graduation, I worked for a few years in law enforcement before deciding to return to education and start my master's program. I currently hold a Master's degree in Public Policy and Management from UTRGV. Today, I am the Director of two successful UTRGV federal grants, Upward Bound, that allow me to combine my passion for supporting and guiding our young generation. In my free time, I enjoy exercising, reading, and spending time with my family. 

Leo Villarreal

UTRGV

Leo Villarreal has over 20 years of experience working an advisor and director for the Educational Talent Search program, a TRIO grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Leo attended the University of Texas at Brownsville completed his BA and MA and received a MBA and PhD with Our Lady of the Lake University.
