Resources to Support a Free and Appropriate Public Education Instructional Continuity Plan for Students with Disabilities

FAPE Instructional Continuity Resources to Support Teachers and Families of Students with Disabilities

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, known as IDEA, dictates all students receive equal access to education. We recognize that this is a very stressful time for school staff and families since, as schools shift to remote lessons, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) must continue to be maintained from a distance in order for students with disabilities to continue having access to the general curriculum. Students who qualify for IEPs, receive specially designed instruction to help them access academic materials. What access means differs from student to student based on disabilities and educators and families may need to "think outside of the box" and be uniquely inventive to address these IEPs during mandatory remote lessons. The Accessible Educational Materials (AEM)Navigator (see link below) is an interactive decision making tool to document IEP decisions made for students by a collaborative team.

The amount of information being shared is overwhelming and at times, confusing. Resources have been aggregated on this page to provide a central location to find current and relevant resources for educators and families to help them plan for instructional continuity. Please visit this page often as resources will be updated on a regular basis to support educators and families of students with disabilities.

We thank everyone who is working very diligently to assure that students remain safe and continue learning as we work together as a community to manage a response to COVID-19.

The AEM Navigator is a process facilitator that guides the work of a collaborative team as they work through an individual student’s need for specialized formats of printed instructional materials. It is not a screening or diagnostic tool. The Navigator is an interactive tool that facilitates the process of decision-making around specialized formats of print instructional materials for an individual student. The four major decision points in the process include 1) determination of need, 2) selection of format(s), 3) acquisition of format(s), and 4) selection of supports for use of accessible printed materials. It also includes a robust set of guiding questions and useful references and resources specifically related to each decision point. Different scaffolds of support are built in so that teams can access information at the level needed to assist them in making informed, accurate decisions.
