On June 18th, students went to the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park. While they were there students interviewed tourists using English. They asked them questions about Japan, Hiroshima and peace.
It was amazing to see so many students happily using English and excitedly looking for more tourists to talk to. The tourists they spoke to were so happy to talk with students from Nagisa. It was a great experience for everyone.
Before the Peace Walk, students worked very hard to practice the interview questions and work together as a group. Being supportive and helpful is a valuable skill for language learning and life. At the Peace Walk worked so well as a group.
Students also made postcards and origami cranes to give as presents after the interview. Both classes made over 900 paper cranes!
So many students wanted to keep talking to tourists. Sometimes learning English can be difficult, but this excursion was a great chance for students to speak English to real people. It will a be a great memory that they will remember always!
Yesterday 4th Grade students listened to a reading of 'Aogiri's Dream'. A story about the aogiri tree that survived the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945.
In the story the tree makes a wish that the events of that day will never be repeated. So it decides to tell people about what happened so that people will know how terrible it was and try to make a peaceful world.
In our open space, there is an aogiri tree exhibit. At first, it was dead and lifeless like that the tree in the story. But students thought about how they can make a peaceful world and wrote messages on leaves. Then just like in the book, the tree was reborn with hope and dreams.
In June students will go to the Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. During that excursion they will interview tourists about peace. They will also ask the tourists about why they like Hiroshima
Today students made a poster about their favorite things in Hiroshima. It was great to see so many different ideas. From famous places like Miyajima and Edion Peace Wing Stadium, to more personal things, like the restaurant a mother works at.
If you visit the school please come to the open space in front of 4th Grade's classrooms to see the posters on display.
From the start of the school year, students have been reviewing phonics from the previous grades.
In yesterday's lesson students played a board game to review the words they have learned so far.
Let's learn, play, and grow together!
