Thanks to Mackensey Bailey and Jane Urban who researched and found grants for us, we were able to get support from Communities that Care (click on the Communities that Care picture to the left to go straight to their site). "The Communities That Care Coalition (CTC) brings together youth, parents, schools, community agencies, and local governments to promote the health and well-being of young people in Franklin County and the North Quabbin region." The grant has allowed us to buy books, get math materials, and have family evenings of reading, doing math, and eating dinner together. These events have launched the math book bag project so families know what to do with the bags when their children come home with a new math book bag. Families have opportunities to engage with books and mathematics all year long! Here is the letter introducing families to the project. My question is why stop at PK?!

For the last three years the pre-k teachers have invited families to come to school in the evening to engage in mathematics with their children. In each bag is a book, some connected math activities and directions for continued engagement in math-talk at home. We meet in the school library where families and their children get cozy, reading books together and engaging in fun math activities related to the mathematics in each book. Afterwards, families meet in the cafeteria for a pizza dinner!

Monday October 22, 2018 - Comments from Families:
Pre-K teachers, Mary and Jaime, along with Julie, Sam, and Mackensie, created "math book bags" for students and families to enjoy reading together. Each bag has a book and math materials that go along with the book. Directions are included to help families explore the mathematics of the book as well as around their home. Here are pictures of families coming to school to read and explore math together with their children.
