Dual Language Program

Dual Immersion at RMS

If you are interested in having your child enter the dual program as a 6th graders please complete form below. Students will be tested during the first few weeks to determine if they are eligible to enter the dual program.

This will be our third year with a Dual Immersion Program.

Students in the Dual Immersion program will have two classes taught in Spanish for the 6th grade:

Science and Spanish Language Arts.


7th and 8th grade the two classes will be:

History and Spanish Language Arts

 

Classes students in Dual Immersion will take as a 6th grade. The classes in red are those classes specifically for those students in the Dual Immersion program.

Language Arts (Year long Class)

All RMS students take English Language Arts (grades 6, 7 and 8).  These courses align with California standards for Language Arts and aim to develop students' reading, writing, listening and communication skills.  By the end of the course, students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of oral, written and visual communication and how it pertains to the real world.  Opportunities of high cluster classes are available in 7th and 8th grade.

Mathematics  (Year long Class)

All RMS  students participate in Math during Years I, II, and III (grades 6-8) navigating various branches of mathematical study.  Math courses align with the California standards and aim to allow for increasing opportunities for students to explain their mathematical thinking, conduct mathematical investigations, and apply math to real life contexts. Students participate in Math  Grade 6, Math Grade 7, and Math Grade. Opportunities for accelerated classes are available at every grade level.  6th grade High cluster classes were based on teacher recommendation and state test scores from 4th grade ( we did not have test scores for this past school year) 

Science in Spanish  (Year long Class)

During the course of study at RMS, students participate in a continuum of science learning Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science and principles of Design and Engineering.  Each course aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards.  Teachers emphasize the development of scientific skills and concepts while instilling an understanding of personal, social and global awareness, and an understanding of how science can serve as a tool to address a variety of personal, social and global issues. 

 History  (Year long Class)

RMS students develop a global understanding of their current world by studying a continuum of subjects beginning with Ancient World Civilizations in Year I, the Medieval World in Year II, and US History in Year III.  Courses align with the California framework for Social Studies and incorporate Common Core literacy standards.  Opportunities for high cluster classes are available at the 7th and  8th grade.    

Physical Education (Year long Class)

These courses provide students with the opportunity to learn a variety of sports and sport related movements as well as health and fitness concepts. Health topics relate to nutrition, fitness, health and wellness. Emphasis is placed on active participation and positive social interaction during fitness and sport activities.

Spanish Language Arts (Year long Class)

This class offers instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Curriculum is based on quality authentic Spanish literature, other grade-level-appropriate media, and/or works related to the social science curriculum. Sixth grade students continue their immersion coursework by participating in the new Spanish Language Arts core class during the regular school day. These classes cover the same grade-level standards that are taught in the mainstream English Language Arts; however, they are conducted in both English and Spanish. Students are placed in these classes pending various assessments and their academic record. 

ELECTIVES:

Coding(Semester Class)

This is an intriductory computer science class in the Scratch program language, that empowers students to create authentic artifcats and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. In this course , students willlearn fundamental concepts and skills of computer science ( SC) and programming and students will explore using computers to solve problems and express themselves. Deisgned to be engaging and relevent to student life , student build, remix and share theri amiinations, games, stories, music and art in an engaging and collaborative environment.

Intro to Art (Semester class)

The focus of the Introduction to Art course is to encourage the student’s imagination, challenge their perception and develop their creative and analytical skills.  Involvement in the arts will encourage the student’s understanding of the arts in context and the cultural histories of artwork, which supports the development of an inquiry and empathetic world view.  This course will challenge and enrich the student’s personal identity and build their awareness of the aesthetics in a real-world context.

English Language Development (Year long Class)

LAS testing. A course designed for students whose dominant language is other than English. This course offers non English proficient students a Communicative and Natural Approach in acquiring a second language. This communicative approach will focus on survival English and developing the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. State recommended core literature is incorporated in a thematic approach.
