Middle school is an incredible journey; one filled with tremendous growth, new opportunities, and, yes, plenty of ups and downs.
As parents of former middle schoolers, Chris and Kyla understand the emotions that come with these years. We know what it feels like to celebrate the successes, worry through the challenges, and wonder if your child is finding their way. Please know that you are not navigating this journey alone.
At John Read Middle School, we believe that struggle is not something to fear—it's an essential part of learning and growing. We encourage students to take healthy risks, celebrate mistakes as opportunities to learn, and understand that meaningful growth is often happening beneath the surface long before it becomes visible. Just like a seed takes time to develop strong roots before it breaks through the ground, our students are building the resilience, confidence, and character they will need long after middle school.
During these important years, the adults in our students' lives serve as both coaches and lighthouses. As coaches, we encourage, challenge, and help students develop the skills they need to succeed. As lighthouses, we provide a steady, unwavering presence—offering guidance, safety, and hope as they learn to navigate increasingly independent waters.
There will be academic challenges. There will be social challenges. There will be moments of disappointment, uncertainty, and tremendous growth. While those moments can be difficult, they are often the experiences that build perseverance, empathy, confidence, and resilience. Together, as partners, we can help our students embrace the journey, knowing that each challenge is preparing them not only for high school, but for life.
Our goal is not to make the path perfectly smooth. Our goal is to help every student develop the confidence and character to navigate whatever path lies ahead.
A short excerpt from Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation" that helps us understand the vital importance of productive struggle.
