September 2022

The class has been busy settling into the new school year and getting used to being big Primary 5s!

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been looking at our reading skills of skimming and scanning. We have been using these skills to support our writing by researching and finding out information about people that have inspired us and information about China. The pupils were able to make fact files about the people they found inspiring including key information about their life and what good they had brought to the world. We have been able to display our leaflets about China in the classroom and the pupils found this particularly interesting as we have started learning Mandarin in class.

Skimming and Scanning

Skimming and Scanning we use to look through information, we use it to read very fast or look for key words. This is useful because we can find key information faster. Maimoonah

Information Leaflets

We were using skimming and scanning to research China and we made leaflets about key facts about China. Charlotte

Numeracy

We started the year by revising key concepts to help get our brains thinking again after a long summer. The pupils covered place value, addition, subtraction and multiplication. They enjoyed getting to challenge themselves and see how much they remembered from Primary 4.

We have since got our Numeracy groups up and running with pupils exploring different concepts such as number patterns, estimation and lines of symmetry. The pupils have been working hard to ensure they support each other while they have been exploring these new concepts. It is really important for us to help each other so everyone can learn and it can help us when we have to use our words to explain it to others. Murray

We have started to explore measuring Volume, Data handling (surveys and bar graphs) and looking at 2D tiling.

Measuring volume - We were measuring the different quantities of the bottles and measuring cups and we came up with questions for each other. We were measuring in millilitres and litres. Kelly.

When we were looking at number sequences I counted to find what the numbers went up in to find the pattern. I worked very hard on it. Calum

We have been looking at what 2D shapes can connect to tile and make a pattern. Brandon

Other Areas of Learning

Mandarin

The school has been very lucky to have Mrs Cao join us again to help to teach the pupils mandarin. She joins our class every Wednesday and so far we have learned a lot of catchy songs that the children have been practising along with greetings and introductions, members of our family and numbers to 10.

Powering the future

With help from the Glasgow Science Centre P5 are learning a new topic about Powering the Future where they have started to look at renewable energy and how we will use this along with different technology to tackle climate change. The pupils started by learning about gears and how they help keep our machinery running.

Gear video - We learnt that when you turn a gear clockwise the other one will turn anticlockwise. They use gears in lots of different machines. Annie

I think it is amazing because I am learning new things like numbers and family members. Adam.

I really like it because it can be very useful if you are travelling to China and if you need to talk to others. Brandon.

Brain-box - Pupils have been enjoying getting to challenge each other to different questions about maths, city's and science.

Inspired by the reading book about hill forts pupils built their own fort. We were using the materials in our class to try and replicate the exact copy of a hill-fort using our knowledge of them. We did it so it looked old fashioned we used pine cones, beads and leafs. Finlay.
