October 2022

The class has been working hard and have now had a much needed rest during their October half term!

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been looking at our reading skills of predicting. We have been using these skills to predict what's going to happen next in a variety of texts.

We have used our predicting skills to help us when it comes to our writing as we have been looking at creating interesting plots in our stories. We have been looking at story mountains and how to effectively build up to a dilemma and keep our readers engaged.

Numeracy

The pupils have been growing in confidence with tackling different maths concepts that pop up in our morning starter. They have been keen to share their solutions with each other and continue to challenge themselves to tackle new questions.

In class this block we have had a theme of data handling with two of our groups looking at recording data through tables and tally marks, along with another group looking at interpreting data from tables and graphs. The pupils have enjoyed this so much that they have been creating their own surveys to complete during their independent learning time.

Trip to the Science Centre

To finish up our learning about renewable energy and how we use different types of energy we have now had a trip to the Glasgow Science Centre with P4/5. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their time there and were even able to see a workshop, teaching us about how our climate has evolved and how the earth and humans use different types of energy.

This station was about using your upper body strength to see how long you can hold on for. Murray and Oliver

You would sprint as fast as you can to see how quick you could run. It is about the muscles in your legs helping you move. Adam

You got to feel different materials, some people might feel it different ways to others. It explored your sense of touch. Brandon

You would talk into the microphone, your voice comes through on the headphones but it gets delayed. It confuses your mind. Charlotte

You would have to stay calm and relax your mind and this would make the ball move to the other person. Brain waves controlled it. Zander.

This light showed your veins. There are some veins you can't see but the light helped. Janvi.

This station tested to see if you could see it clearly and you had to try and read it out. It showed what it would be like to have cataracts. Sarah

This one was about showing what smokers lungs would be like, they were black and burnt and didn't work as well as the healthy ones. Noor.

This one was about how long you could balance without holding onto anything. It was very hard. Calum

This one was about teamwork to try and get the apple. You had to work together and communicate. Cameron.

You had to use one hand to try and make a very big tower and to try and see if you could do it by the time the timer was up. Sarah.

You push down the bottle to build pressure and when you let go it flies up. Murray

The room was sideways and you could slide down it. It is an illusion room. Ethan.

This activity was one where you had to move the bar to pump the water so it could reach the red line in the middle of the container. It was showing hydro power. Finlay.

You had to put your hand on the water and then rub your hands on the bowl and the vibrations created patterns. Finlay.

The vibrations didn't reach the middle because they ended at the sides. Oliver.

When the bar went up it made a big bubble that you could see colours because it caused the light to split and reflect their colours. Annie

When you tried to lean backwards gravity held you, it felt really hard. Lewis.

When you rub the string on the table it vibrates and moves the sand and it sounds like you are drilling stuff. Janvi

You could look at the objects below the microscope and you could zoom in to see the tiny details on the screen. Maimoonah

We were learning about a volcano and she mixed stuff together so it would look like a volcano but with fire not lava. Cameron

This showed us heat energy. Maimoonah.

The show was really fun to go and see all the really fun experiments. Adam.

The lady mixed two liquids together and it started glowing. This was us chemiluminescence. Kelly.

Animals do this at the bottom of the sea, to communicate and send messages to scare off predators. Charlotte, Finlay.

Other Areas of Learning

Our time with Mrs Cao has come to an end but not to worry we will be continuing to learn Mandarin in class. Thanks to her hard work P5 have been able to learn their family members, numbers and colours in Mandarin and look forward to continuing to learn some more. If you are wanting to learn some Mandarin at home as your Primary 5 to teach you one of the songs that they have learnt, a class favourite is our numbers to 10 song!

We have been learning Mandarin with our teacher, we were learning the colours and their names. Ethan.

Black History Month

As October is Black History month we have been learning about different significant black figures from history and from our current time. During the class discussion, the pupils have been very mature and interested in learning about these different figures along with the importance of having Black History Month. The pupils have been creating some art that has been inspired by black artists and some of these photos are attached below.

We have been looking at abstract art, making patterns by using cut up pieces of paper. Zander.

We used Gee Bend quilts as inspiration and tried to create our own patch work art inspired by them. Charlotte

We were learning about Gee Bend which is a community who made blankets from scrap pieces of material to keep warm but they were able to sell them as people realised they were art. Murray

We were learning about Lubaina Himid and were following the instructions for what we were to do with the art but we had to pick our own type of patterns for example picking something around the room and copying the pattern and colour. Adam.
