What does learning look like in Primary 4 Alpha?

Every morning when the children arrive in class there are active learning areas for the children to explore and engage with. Learning is kept as active as possible to ensure children are engaged in their learning and understand its relevance. We also allow for challenge and application of our learning, with additional opportunities to explore and work co - co-operatively. We have a class shop, arts and craft area, quiet reading corner and a construction area.
In class we have created an ethos where we value mistakes as an opportunity to grow our brains and to celebrate the act of trying. We also continually reflect on our own learning and make links of how we can use our newly learnt skills in real life contexts.

The children are encouraged to lead their learning and enjoy opportunities to share their ideas and thinking. We continue to seize opportunities for children to do this and it has been wonderful to learn more about the children through these experiences.
We have also begun to develop a class ethos of a positive attitude for reading. The class have enjoyed reading our first novel 'James and The Giant Peach', The Twits' and 'The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me'. The children also have regular opportunities to read privately a text of their choice.

Home learning is issued on a Tuesday, with it hoped that it can be handed in for the coming Monday. I aim to ensure home learning is as active and open ended as possible, to help the children engage with it and link what they are doing at home with what they are learning in class.
