Class Blog September 2022 - Numeracy (Place Value)
We have been learning how to sequence numbers up to and beyond 10,000. You have to be careful when crossing into the next ten, hundred or thousand i.e. 1199, 1200...
We have been learning how to represent numbers in different ways i.e. numerically, pictorially, in word form etc. In this game we had to match the numerical form to the word form.
We have also been learning how to order and compare numbers (up to 6 digits).
We had to roll a dice to create a 3, 4, 5, or 6 digit number...then follow the instructions to the right...
We have been learning how to find 1 more/less than, 10 more/less than, 100 more/less than and 1000 more/less than.
We created Place Value Palaces from Base 10 materials!
We have also been participating in 'Maths Mastery' sessions.
Maths Mastery is fun because you get to work with others to solve tricky word problems.
We liked the place value riddles the most!
Here are some examples below...
Create four 4-digit numbers to fit the following rules:
•The tens digit is 3
•The hundreds digit is two more than the ones digit
•The four digits have a total of 12
Which is the odd one out?
3,500
3,500 ones
2 thousands and 15 hundreds
35 tens
Explain how you know.
A whole number is rounded to 370
What could the number be?
Write down all the possible answers
Class Blog October 2022 (Learning Through Play)
We enjoy playing in the construction area. Take a look at our wonderful creation...we had to adapt our design several times so that it would balance...finally we created our animal kingdom!
Here are some more examples of how we learn through play...
Skills involved - team work, creativity, problem solving, strategy, communication, manipulation, imagination, fine motor control...the list goes on and on!
Numeracy (September/October 2022) - Shape
In Numeracy, we have been learning to;
Name angles - acute, reflex, obtuse, right, straight
Order and compare angles
Identify missing angles - complementary and supplementary
Measure and draw angles
Next we will be exploring 2D and 3D shape...
We will be learning to;
Name and identify the properties of 2D and 3D shapes
Name and identify the properties of different types of triangles - isosceles, scalene, equilateral
Identify missing angles in triangles
Create and continue patterns using 2D shapes
Explore symmetry
Science Centre Trip 25th October
Our memories were being tested here...you had to remember the sequence in order to complete the maze successfully!
Our Science Workshop was about climate change. We talked about how climate change is affecting life on Earth and how Scotland is using renewable energy sources to help the situation. Here is an example of wind power. Later on this year we will be investigating this topic further by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of renewable/non-renewable energy sources.
We will also be learning how to care for the environment and take positive steps to reduce our carbon footprint .
On the 3rd floor we investigated the human body. Here, we were looking at the structure of our DNA...fascinating!
Class Blog November 2022 - Trip to Vikingar
Our trip to Vikingar was a great success...we gained some new information about the Vikings...and had lots of fun along the way...
We enjoyed trying on Viking helmets...they were extremely heavy and uncomfortable though so we couldn't keep them on for long!
We explored a typical Viking longhouse...and learned about the kinds of foods Vikings ate.
In this room we made some discoveries about Viking Gods and mythology...
...we also learned that we shouldn't believe everything we see in movies!
Here, we had fun trying on Viking clothes...some of us were even lucky enough to get married! We also watched a short video clip about the Battle of Largs (1263), demonstrating the importance of this event in Scottish history. Overall, it was an amazing and extremely worthwhile trip!
December 2022
In Maths, we have been;
creating symmetrical patterns
identifying lines of symmetry by folding, cutting and/or using mirrors
completing symmetrical shapes and patterns
Take a look at some of our wonderful designs...
We can name and describe the properties of 3D objects.
We can also name different types of triangles - equilateral, scalene and isosceles.
Primary 4 have been learning how to add and subtract mentally, as well as using the standard written method. Here, we solved tricky word problems. We underlined the key information, then went on to solve the problems using 'chimney sums'.
This month we have been learning about the causes and effects of global warming. We researched how to reduce our 'carbon footprint' and, in order to raise awareness within the school, created some eye-catching posters! Don't they look amazing?
Take a look at some of our wonderful winter art!
This week we listened to the Christmas story. We then went on to research how Christmas is celebrated around the world and drew some comparisons to Scotland.
We are very much looking forward to the Nativity and Pantomime this week, as well as our House Challenge on Friday!
Enjoy the festive period and we look forward to seeing you again in the New Year!
January 2023
Primary 4 have been working hard to learn their multiplication and division facts. They know how to divide with remainders too! Here, we are using a Topmarks game to help us visualise what is happening when we group items together. Counters and loose parts can also be helpful in this process.
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=grouping
What we will be learning next...
Continue to consolidate our multiplication and division facts up to x10 (mental strategies)
Explore fractions
Look at ways in which data can be presented
What we will be exploring next...
How to solve problems involving fractions and decimals
Elements of time
Measurement (length, weight and volume)
Primary 5 are enjoying working with fractions. They know how to:
identify fractions
identify tenths and hundredths
find equivalent fractions
simplify fractions
convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and vice versa
add, subtract and compare fractions
Fraction walls help us to visualise equivalent fractions. You can clearly see that 1/2 is the same as 2/4, 3/6...and so on...can you spot anymore equivalent fractions?
In Literacy, we have been exploring the differences between facts and opinions. We then went on to investigate how consumers are influenced by persuasive techniques in advertising.
After that, we had a go at applying these techniques to our own writing. We designed holiday homes/ hotels and created leaflets to advertise them. AFOREST is a useful acronym to help us remember persuasive techniques; alliteration, facts, opinions, rhetorical questions, emotive language, statistics and triplets. The children did a fantastic job!
What we will be learning next:
how to take effective notes
how to write non-chronological reports
how to skim and scan to identify the main idea
