Erick’s peers respect him for his dedication, creativity, and the positive impact he has made on campus life.
Leslie Aguilar (Class of 2030)
It's truly inspiring to witness the cyclical nature of giving back, especially when it involves alumni returning to nurture the very roots that helped them grow. One such remarkable example is Leslie, who graced our halls as an 8th grader just three years ago. During her middle school years, Leslie was a quiet presence, not particularly involved in extracurricular activities or leadership roles. However, something sparked within her during her time here and in High School, igniting a passion for community engagement that continues to blossom. Since her culmination, Leslie has returned to her Equitas 4 every single year to volunteer her time and energy. She's become a familiar and welcome face, assisting with everything from helping support the front office, helping organize, and connecting with current middle school students. She also volunteers time at the Los Angeles County "General" Hospital's (NICU) neonatal intensive care unit. Her dedication is a testament to the lasting impact this school had on her, and it serves as a powerful reminder that even the quietest students can discover their potential to make a difference. Her consistent return each year isn't just about fulfilling a sense of obligation; it's about actively participating in the growth of the next generation, offering her own experiences and insights to inspire current students to find their own paths to contribution.
Jairo Orozco (Class of 2031)
It's with immense pride to nominate Jairo Orozco for the Commitment to Community award. Many will remember Jairo from his time at Equitas 4. Even then, his dedication to our community was evident. He was an active and engaged student, always willing to lend a hand and contribute positively to the school environment. In fact, during his culmination year, Jairo was considered for the honorary Safety Award, a testament to his commitment to the well-being of his fellow students. While he wasn't ultimately selected, the consideration itself spoke volumes about his character and the impact he had on EQ4. It's truly inspiring to see that Jairo's commitment hasn't waned; rather, it's grown. He's a shining example of what it means to live Equitas 4 school's pillars, not just during his time there, but beyond. Jairo has demonstrated leadership skills and a strong commitment to the community as his high school Soccer Team Manager. From organizing team logistics to fostering a positive and inclusive environment, Jairo motivates players to perform their best. Jairo also volunteers at EQ4, giving back to the school community that nurtured him. It's a testament to the values we instill and the sense of community we foster. His willingness to return and give back speaks volumes about the positive experience he had and his desire to ensure that future students have the same opportunities. He represents the best of what we strive for at Equitas.
Kylie Magdaleno (Class of 2032)
It's inspiring to see one of our recent graduates, Kylie, a new 9th grader, not only navigating this transition with grace but also embodying the very spirit of giving back that we strive to instill at Equitas. Kylie's commitment to her community is truly remarkable. From dedicating her time to coaching young girls in cheerleading, nurturing their confidence and teamwork skills, to shifting her focus to the crucial LA Fire Relief efforts, she demonstrates a remarkable adaptability and a genuine desire to support those in need. Her actions speak volumes about her values and her dedication to making a real difference. Kylie’s contributions extend beyond direct service. She bravely stepped forward as an alumni ambassador, lending her voice to advocate for Equitas 2's charter renewal at the LAUSD Board meeting. This act of civic engagement highlights her understanding of the importance of quality education and her willingness to champion the opportunities that Equitas 2 provides. Furthermore, her decision to run for Grade Level Student Vice President at her new high school, though ultimately unsuccessful, showcases her courage and leadership potential. It takes a special kind of person to put themselves out there and strive to make a positive impact within their school community. Kylie's willingness to take on this challenge speaks to her character and her commitment to leadership. Beyond these impressive accomplishments, Kylie continues to be a familiar and welcome presence at EQ2 and other Equitas school sites, volunteering her time and energy to support current students. Her commitment to the Pico Union Project for Vida Sana, where she assists with recruitment, further exemplifies her dedication to the broader community. Kylie's dedication is a gift to the Equitas community and demonstrates that alumni involvement can take many forms.

Excerpts from the nominations of this year’s winners:
Nathan L. (Class of 2028)
Nate is one of the top students in his overall grade level, participates in sports, many clubs, and numerous on-campus events. Additionally, Nathaniel has been chosen a number of times to attend field trips as a representative for our school as a STEM student. Nathaniel is an active learner who never hesitates to ask how he can support others. Nathaniel was asked to be a member of our School Site Council as his voice is always an important one when it comes to making positive changes to our school. Additionally, he knows how to present feedback to stakeholders in a way that is mature and respectful. Aside from being a member of the boy's basketball team, Nate took it upon himself to be an academic mentor to a student who transferred into our school and joined the team. Previously, the student failed all classes at his school. After working with Nate for a semester, the student earned Honor Roll. Nate stays after school frequently and engages with our after-school program, often working with other students to build community. He is really just a light and positive force at the school. He is one of the most impressive students I have ever worked with in my 13 year educational career.
Nate consistently volunteers within the school. He has partnered with administration and school custodians to work on a school clean up campaign, participates in peer-tutoring, and supports other school sports. Nate has a goal to one day be an engineer. One of his passions is getting clean water for everyone in the world; especially those living in underserved communities. As a student, he remembers clearly having to walk to his neighborhood bodega with his mom to get clean water for his family. He was very much inspired by this and has consistently said he wants to work to make this a reality for all.
Nate is a model for other students at our school. He is a truly motivated individual -- not just for his own gain, but to help support others. Nate truly lives and breathes to make things better for his family but also for others around him. I am really impressed with how reflective Nate is and how he thinks about his positionally in the school and in the larger neighborhood.
Astro O. (Class of 2029)
As an active member of the Associated Student Body (ASB), Astro has been instrumental in organizing various school events, including pep rallies, dances, and the much-anticipated Winter Carnival. Their ability to bring the community together and create memorable experiences for their peers is a testament to their leadership and commitment to school spirit. In addition to these efforts, Astro's participation in community events underscores their dedication to civic engagement and community service. Astro's talents further shine in the realm of performing arts. Their performances in the Drama Club, especially in the improv show 'Made Up Stuff,' are not only hilarious but also demonstrate their creativity and confidence. These qualities make them a standout member of the Drama Club and an inspiration to their peers who admire their artistic abilities. Academically, Astro sets a high standard as a model student in honors and Advanced Placement courses. Their dedication to academic excellence, combined with their active participation in extracurricular activities, makes them a well-rounded individual and a role model for their peers. Astro's advocacy work as a strong and vocal member of the Gay Straight Alliance (formerly known as Pride Club) is particularly commendable. Their efforts in promoting inclusivity, understanding, and support for the LGBTQ+ community within the school are vital contributions to social justice.
Samantha M. (Class of 2031)
Samantha is always helping everyone out , keeping up with all the work and having positive interactions with everyone around her. Samantha is dedicated to do her work and pushes her teammates to accomplish their work. Samantha had done a presentation based on Mass Incarceration and let her peers know why it's impacting our society. She did research, asked questions to open up her thinking and others. Samantha's effort has impacted the Pico-Union community by volunteering her time in community service hours. She went to her old middle school and engaged in positive multigenerational change.

Excerpts from the nominations of this year’s winners:
Leslie J. (Class of 2025)
Leslie is a stellar student at her high school. She is aware of the community she grew up in and is proud of it. She knows that her community, Pico-Union is currently impacted by gentrification and therefore believes that the people in the community have education as an opportunity to improve their current circumstances. Her interest on mental health awareness is evident as she spends time in the counseling office discussing the importance of emotional intelligence. She supports one of the counselors by updating the school's "Mindset is Everything" wall. This wall displays a variety of messages on mental health, sexual orientation, identity, healthy relationships, coping mechanisms for anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Besides her interest on mental health, Leslie has high grades and wants to attend a four-year university after high school. She knows the impact that a four-year university will have on her, her family, and her community. Leslie is already taking action on causes that are important to all.
