Philosophy

At Elkhorn South, our Cross Country program is committed to developing champions, both on and off the athletic field.  We believe a champion is one who lives by high ideals, sets realistic goals, and dedicates himself or herself to achieving them.

We celebrate the fact that Cross Country is a challenging yet rewarding sport.  We believe that running is a great metaphor for life because you get out of it what you put into it. The cross country athlete must develop a fair amount of courage and humility because running exposes personal strengths and weaknesses.  Because a high level of endurance is needed to reach your potential as a runner, training is expected through the summer months to prepare for the season.  We believe that the definition of success is what former legendary basketball coach John Wooden says, “It is having the peace of mind knowing that you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable of.” Athletes are encouraged to measure this success by the improvement and effort given to the team.  We believe that hard work and fun can always be emphasized together.

A strong work ethic, perseverance, self discipline, commitment, and character are all honorable qualities that can be developed through participation in our Cross Country program.
