Francis Falcons are SOARin'! MJF is working hard to motivate our learners to be the best they can be. Students are working to "SOAR": be safe, on task, aware, and respectful. Students have individual SOAR cards that staff members can punch when they demonstrate one of the SOAR qualities. When they get 10 punches on their card they can pick a fun activity to do and display their card in the hallway on our SOAR bulletin board. Students can also enter into a raffle. Previous raffles were pie the principals, a hot chocolate party; and January's raffle is making Borax crystal snowflakes!
In addition to SOAR cards - all of our classrooms now have SOAR charts! When an entire class is caught SOARin' a staff member will award them a falcon token. When the class fills their chart with 20 tokens they will be recognized over the loudspeaker and earn a class reward that they can choose together such as a stuffed animal day or extra recess minutes. We are so excited about this new PBIS system and encourage you to ask your student about it!
Every month at MJF, teachers nominate students for the GRIT award. Students can earn this coveted recognition for demonstrating any of the core qualities of GRIT: growth, resilience, integrity, or teamwork. This recognition differs from a traditional stuent of the month approach because students are honored for many things - not just their academic achievement. When students are selected for the GRIT award, they are invited with their families to a before school ceremony where they receive a certificate explaining how they showed GRIT. Francis Falcons are #All-In on GRIT!
All absences, tardies and early dismissals are recorded and reported as unexcused unless an appropriate excuse is provided in writing.
Excused absences, tardies and dismissals include a student’s participation in an approved school-sponsored activity, suspension days, religious holidays, bereavement, a doctor-excused illness or injury, Excusal notes must be submitted no later than two (2) school days following the absence), a school nurse-teacher excused illness or injury, court appearance, military deployment event or dismissal from school by school Principal or designee
Note: When attending an annual check up, the student can either be excused early, or be brought back to school, but should not be out for an entire day
A parent/guardian is required to call the school (401) 433-6235 to report each day their child is absent.
Students absent more than 10% of the school year at any given time are considered chronically absent. This includes tardies and/or early dismissals.
Following two (2) absences per month or six (6) absences per quarter, the school will implement the decision rules as it applies to attendance. Decision rules include parent contact, Parent Square, phone calls, letters, parent meeting, etc.
Following ten (10) absences per school year, a parent/guardian meeting will be scheduled and/or a referral could be made to the Attendance Office for a pre-truancy meeting.
All students with any unexcused absence on the day of a school-related activity (e.g. dance, play, sports) may not attend or participate in that activity.
Students who are tardy must be accompanied by a parent/guardian to the school office to sign in for the day.
Students will receive one day to make up work for every day they are absent.
Student absence from class for purposes of family travel or vacation is a loss of valuable class time and is not condoned. Note: this time counts toward chronic absenteeism.
As of January 26, 2026, Myron J. Francis was ranked 10th for all schools in the state for attendance, with just under 6% of our students being chronically absent! Keep coming to school, Falcons! We are #All-In on strong attendance at MJF!
