Bring Your Own Device Information
S. Bruce Smith has a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. Students are encouraged to bring a device to enhance their learning and expand the opportunities afforded in the classroom. For details on what we require for a device, see this document. Students who cannot provide their own device have been able to borrow one from the school, much like a textbook.
Mathematics
Math is everywhere, not just equations on a page. Fundamental and essential skill development remains important, but at SBS we focus on the application of its use across all areas of learning. From solving complex problems, collaborating on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects or creating art, math has a place in every Scorpion's skill set.
Language Arts
With an emphasis on reading and writing, students are equipped with the critical skills of communication. No matter what profession or career our students will choose for themselves in the future, being able to share and effectively communicate their ideas is a key focus of our Language Arts program.
Science
In science, we STRIVE to gain an understanding of the physical and natural world around us by following a systematic and evidence-based methodology. Throughout each unit of study, students will utilize an authentic, hands-on discovery approach to investigate and interpret scientific concepts. By being actively involved in their learning through experiments, projects and research assignments students will gain the knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to understand how their world works and how we can make it even better for future generations.
Social Studies
The creation of a good citizen involves understanding how our society has been successful and how it needs to be improved. No matter what we do, we are influenced by our history and impacted by our actions as we move towards the future. We want our students to have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to make good choices for themselves and their community.
French
The French program at S.Bruce Smith aims to develop each student’s ability to speak, listen, read and write in French. The students also gain an understanding of the importance of French culture in Canada by exploring Quebecoise literature, music, films and food. French is offered at each grade level.
Physical Education
The physical education program at our school focuses on allowing students to see the benefits of physical activity and to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will encourage them to live an active and healthy lifestyle. As part of creating balanced students, we provide equal opportunity for all to develop skills of teamwork, collaboration and the opportunity to work well with others in a variety of sport-related activities.
We know that Physical Education supports a healthy mind and enhanced quality of life and it takes many forms at S. Bruce Smith from traditional sports to fun games and activities.
Options
We want to ensure that students at S. Bruce Smith are exposed to as many opportunities as possible. Through our Options programming and other venues, we believe that learners can discover not only their passions and interests but also about themselves.
