What is an field course and what is the time commitment ?
Beyond Four Wall is a flexible, project-based, experiential learning opportunity. During September and late fall, we have weekly seminars off campus. During the field portion of the class, students should expect to be present in their field placement around one day a week plus additional prep time and meetings with teacher mentors. The time, however, is flexible in different placements. Some are online, some take place furing different times of the day. Students can consult with our field coordinator about field placements. Students should understand that Beyond Four Walls will require approximately 6-8 hours of their time per week.
Is the course in person, hybrid, or online?
Depending on provincial and university COVID regulations, the course will be offered in person with the possibility of online participation for field placements.
What kind of housing and transportation do I need?
Depending on your field placement, you will need accommodation in the Edmonton area and transportation to your field placement. Field placement sites will be available at the Argyll Centre (Holyrood), the Metro Centre (King Edward Park), the Bennett Centre (Cloverdale), and a variety of community locations around the Edmonton area. Weekly seminars will be held at the Bennett Centre, which is accessible via ETS at the LRT stop at Muttart Conservatory and various bus lines. Online field placements can be completed remotely.
What kinds of placements are available and how do I get matched?
All experiential learning placements in this course are facilitated by the staff at Bennett/Argyll/Metro Centres in Edmonton Public Schools, although some placements are available outside of EPS. Once placements are finalized, you will review these placement options and rank your choices in preparation for a one-on-one placement meeting with Julia Dalman, Community Liaison-BAM, who coordinates placements for this course.

Are there costs associated with this course?
The instructors of this course endeavor to make the program accessible to all students, which means reducing the costs associated with participation. For students participating in online field placements, personal technology and internet access will be a requirement. For all other students, we anticipate costs associated with transportation. There are no required textbooks for this course; all reading and course materials will be available via e-class.
"I took EDFX 490 in the winter of 2021. I didn’t even need the course to complete my degree, but I took it anyway because it really hit the spot of what I wanted to get out of my education training: exploring different ways to educate. I even found a program that was a better fit for my own teenage son! I also like that I was assessed in the spirit of the alternative program I engaged with; it really gave me a feel of what it would be like to be one of those students."
