The world has many hard-working and creative entrepreneurs. Personal-owned businesses are evolving; younger people are starting to expand the business community throughout these generations. I had the pleasure of interviewing a friend of mine Jocelyn Mendoza. She is 17 and created her business that revolves around jewelry. I interviewed her to show the process and effort it takes to have a business.

Question: Can you provide me with a description of your business? What services or products do you offer?

Answer: “Basically I make custom rings on Instagram and they are usually made from wire and plastic beads. I sell them for a really cheap price, so everyone can have trendy and fashionable rings.”

Question: Where did you get the idea for your business? When did you start your business?

Answer: “I kept getting a bunch of Tik Toks of these people making these wire rings. It seemed easy; it looked like a lot of fun. So I thought, I might as well sell them since I enjoyed making them. I started my business in February. I was so excited to order this stuff and make it. The orders came in the middle of school. I was distracted the whole time because I was making the rings.”

Question: How long did it take to perfect the jewelry?

Answer: “I was watching Tik Tok over and over about it. So by the time the stuff came, I knew what to do. My first ring was horrendous, but after three tries, I made a good one for the first time.”

Question: What is unique about your company?

Answer: “I’d say that everything is handmade. I do not buy anything already made to sell. Everything is custom made with my own hands and no one else's.”

Question: How has the corona virus (COVID-19) impacted your business?

Answer: “The mail is a lot slower. People sometimes thought I scammed them when I didn't. It was just because the mail took a long time to get to my customers. In addition, driving to drop off the rings in their mailbox instead of saying hi to the people I gave it to. That was hard because you don't see who you're giving it to. The positives were that I got to talk to people during COVID-19, even though it was just about my rings. I was able to reach out to a bunch of new people”

Question: Tell me about a time when you were faced with an unhappy client. How did you manage the situation?

Answer: “So there's an order I had in Oklahoma, and the rings never came. Three weeks went by and they haven't come. I told her that I would remake all the rings and she didn't have to refund anything. I told her that if they ended up arriving she could keep them. They ended up coming the second time, so everything worked out”

Question: What advice do you have for other small business owners?

Answer: “If you have an idea, go for it! I was skeptical if I wanted to make jewelry. However, I found myself enjoying making jewelry for other people. Don't be afraid to do new things. Go for it and it might lead you to new passions."
