Another October, another great opportunity for a good scary film, so something wicked your way comes!

A classic Tim Burton film, albeit not his most popular one, Sleepy Hollow stars Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon (hello there Professor Dumbledore!) and Christopher Walken.

Based on Washington Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", Burton's is a darker more gothic reinterpretation. The story follows Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp), a skeptical New York constable sent to the village of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of grisly murders. The townsfolk believe the culprit to be the legendary Headless Horseman, a ghostly Hessian mercenary. Unlike the original tale, Burton's version blends horror, romance and detective elements with his signature gothic style, making it a perfect pick for October's film (Did anyone say Halloween?)!

For those brave cinephiles who love horror films, this one is definitely for you. Its moody cinematography, foggy forests and haunting set design create the perfect eerie fairytale atmosphere. Depp makes full use of his considerable talents to give Crane an eccentric, fussy and slightly cowardly aura offering both humour and vulnerability. Christina Ricci adds a more ethereal charm, even though her character is less developed.

Critics generally praised the film's atmosphere, production design and style. It has since become a cult favourite, especially among Tim Burton's sizeable fanbase.
