Welcome back, dear movie junkie, for another film session! Now December can only mean one thing: Christmas of course! It's the season of lights, gifts, decorated trees and overall joy. So, we present to you: The Man who Invented Christmas, starring Dan Stevens in the role of Charles Dickens and Christopher Plummer in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge.
Most of you must surely know the timeless novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens; you know the drill, 3 ghosts visit our mean friend Mr. Scrooge hoping for something that seems truly impossible: a change of character! That's all very good, but do you know the story of how Charles Dickens created the beloved novel? I thought so! But fear not, because that's why we're here, to show you by means of this lovely film how Dickens came up with the whole thing that has entertained generations and generations of book lovers.
The film is set in 1843 London, where a struggling Charles Dickens needs a strong comeback after several unsuccessful novels. Facing the collapse of his writing career and mounting pressures at home, he looks for inspiration to produce something that will bewitch readers. As he moves through London, meeting a motley cast of people, a hardened old man who mutters "humbug" among others, Dickens starts weaving together characters and events into what would later become the well-known novel. His famous creations (like Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Marley etc.) emerge from his observations of real people, I bet you didn't know that, did you?
One of the film's strongest points is definitely the imaginative premise of showing Dickens interacting with the characters he's inventing, which adds a fun, meta twist on the creative process. The performances are impeccable, Christopher Plummer received a lot of praise for his portrayal of Scrooge, but that's hardly surprising! The visually appealing cinematography, festive atmosphere and beautiful recreation of the Victorian era give the film a cozy holiday-season vibe.
So, what are you waiting for? Run to the library and kick-off the holiday season in the most magical way! You can thank us later.
