Initial contact: The Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) will make first contact by telephone to listen to parents’/caregivers’ concerns and provide initial advice.
Information Gathering: We will ask you about the child’s development, from birth up to how they are getting on at school.
Initial Assessment: Assessment appointments will take place in the child’s home or school.
Preschool age: The SaLT will play with the child and observe their communication. They will play using objects and pictures to encourage the child to engage. They will usually assess speech and/or language at the first assessment.
For school aged children, the SaLT may use more formal assessments to assess specific aspects of speech, language or social communication.
At the end of the appointment the SaLT will discuss their observations and the next steps with the parent/caregiver. The SaLT will take some time to analyse the information they have collected so may not be able to give a diagnosis immediately.
Some children’s speech, language or communication skills may require additional assessment time.
Target setting: The SaLT will discuss therapy goals and intended outcomes with parents/caregivers and often with teachers:
Activities for the parent/caregiver to do at home
Direct intervention
Discharge
Therapy may need to be delivered for many weeks or months depending on the needs of the child. Therapy sessions typically last 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the child’s needs. The type of therapy chosen will influence the number, length and spacing of sessions. The frequency of sessions will take into account the amount and type of extra practice outside the therapy sessions.
After a period or block of therapy it is usual to have a consolidation period.
Your child may have received previous Speech and Language Therapy input elsewhere, Enhance Communication can work with you to develop and implement the goals that have been identified, please contact us to find out more information.
